The Ultimate BURGER SHOW DOWN is Happening and the Grills are Searing

The Ultimate BURGER

The Ultimate BURGER SHOWDOWN Featuring TOP SA CHEFS is BACK on Oct. 13th at Alamo Beer

Homegrown Chef’s annual burger competition, the ultimate Burger Show Down, is back for its fourth year. The Burger Showdown 4.0, will feature top San Antonio chefs and restaurants (see list below). The event takes place on Friday, October 13, 2023, from 6 to 9 pm (5:30 pm for VIPs) at popular Eastside brewery, Alamo Beer

The Ultimate BURGER

This year, 10 phenomenal San Antonio chefs compete and YOU eat! This event is always a community fundraiser, and this year, funds raised will go towards the San Antonio Food Bank.

Sides & Dessert:

Besides 10 handcrafted gourmet sliders, Homegrown Chef will be making fresh-fried French Fries and Texas Cookie Shop will be providing their yummy fresh-baked cookies for dessert.

The Ultimate BURGER

This is an outdoor event. Chefs will be set up under the beautiful Hays Street Bridge, so join us for yet another nail biting burger battle – cheer on the chefs and find out how many burgers you can actually eat – all for a wonderful cause!

Judges

While normally this is an audience-voted only competition where guests get to vote for their favorite burger, this year there will also be a judge’s panel, which includes Great Day SA’s reporter, Clark Finney; Edible San Antonio’s co-publisher, Ralph Yznaga; and San Antonio Food Bank’s director of food sustainability, Mitch Hagney.

The Ultimate BURGER

“The Burger Showdown is always such a great community event and a really fun way to celebrate our incredible chefs while getting out and trying something new and absolutely delicious. I like to challenge people to eat all the burgers because it’s never been done!” says Kimberly Suta, event coordinator, Homegrown Chef founder and local food writer.

Competing Chefs & Menu (in alpha order):

*Most chefs’ burgers will be made with superior pasture-raised beef (grass-fed and grain-fed half-blood Akaushi) from local rancher, 529meats, along with an array of amazing ingredients from Ben E. Keith & Food Related

– Chef Diana Anderson of JD’s Chili Parlor (last year’s 3rd place winner)

The Italian Job is an Italian-inspired flavor bomb made with JD’s new Tomato Basil pasta sauce, white wine/garlic marinated grass-fed Akuashi beef from 529meats, buffalo mozzarella, zucchini, red onion and romaine hearts, skewered with fried mushrooms and cherry tomatoes.

The Ultimate BURGER

– Chef Justin Bluhm of STXBBQ

The Oktoberfest Burger is inspired by the popular German festival staples of beer, meat, cheese and pretzels. It’s made with a perfectly-smoked grain-fed Akaushi patty from 529meats and topped with a slice of STXBBQ’s prime brisket, house-pickled onions and finished with a smoked beer queso pour-over on a locally-made soft pretzel bun. Prost!

– Chef Joshua Calderon of Catering by JC

The Backyard Barbecue Burger is made with 529meats’ grass-fed Akuashi beef, cheddar cheese, onion, cucumber and iceberg lettuce on a potato roll.

– Chef Stephen Chavez of FredericksBurgers

The Bacon Huebner Burger is a classic, mouthwatering bacon mushroom swiss burger served at the popular brick and mortar in Balcones Heights near, you guessed it, Fredericksburg Road! However, for the Burger Showdown they will be making them with 529meats grain-fed Akuashi beef.

– Chef Francisco Estrada of Naco

The Aztec God Burger is made with a black garlic-seasoned 529meats grain-fed Akuashi beef patty, epazote aioli and topped with a layer of caramelized onions and huitlacoche.

– Chef Greg Ferris of Bobbie’s Cafe

The Texas Tailgate Burger is a traditional burger with Bobbie’s Cafe’s usual “go big or go home” twist – made with 529meat’s grain-fed Akuashi beef, American cheese and BBQ chips.

– Chef Kaius of The Kaius Experience

The Texan Black Gold Burger features a juicy 529meats grass-fed Akaushi beef patty seasoned with a blend of rich Texan spices, topped with melted aged cheddar cheese, a savory black garlic aioli, roasted jalapeño bacon and crispy truffle sweet potato sticks, served on a brioche bun.

– Chef Joseph Thadeus Martinez of Tributary (last year’s 1st place winner)

The French Onion Burger is made with a Dean and Peeler smash patty, black pearl onion aioli, gruyere fonduta and crispy shallots on a sourdough potato slider bun.

– Chef Braunda Smith of Lucy Cooper’s Ice House

This Food Network star is known for her burgers and will tell you she can make a burger out of absolutely anything, which is why she wants to surprise you! You’ll have to come to find out what Chef Braunda is up to!

– Chef James Richard Smith of toohotfortabc (last year’s 2nd place winner)

The Blue Mountain Smash Burger is sweet heat, bacon jam and veggies on a Far West Texas Cattle Co. smashed beef patty with melted American cheese on a sourdough bun.
