This first-ever crowning of a king and queen is ahead of the VIP culinary kickoff event for Fiesta® San Antonio on April 20. Taste of the Republic

For years, San Antonio’s been entertained by the jazz piano virtuosity of Doc Watkins and the captivating charm of actress and TV personality Ara Celi. This year, for the first time ever, the two will reign as King and Queen of the Republic at Taste of the Republic at The Alamo, the VIP culinary kickoff event for Fiesta® San Antonio on April 20.

The newly crowned king and queen bring a legacy of San Antonio credentials. Watkins is the owner and marquee headliner of the stylish Jazz, TX nightclub, restaurant and cocktail bar at the renowned Pearl complex. San Antonians know Ara Celi for her signature “just inside Loop 1604” flourish on local TV ads, along with film roles in “American Beauty,” “Machete” and “Bruce Almighty.” She also owns the local chain of high-end barbershops called Matador Men’s Grooming.

The debut coronation of a king and queen comes just days after Taste of the Republic announced its all-star lineup of 12 local celebrity chefs, who along with founding chef Brian West will serve food from the six culinary regions of Texas paired with wine, spirits and beer. In another first, Taste of the Republic moves to The Alamo this year, just in time for the opening of the new Ralston Family Collections Center of historical artifacts including the Alamo collection of musician Phil Collins.
