Magik’s Dragons Hit the Road with Dragons Love Tacos Feb. 28

Take a ‘Taco’ Tour with Magik’s Dragons on Tour This Spring

In the theatre world, “the show must go on,” even when there is no theatre. Magik Theatre, San Antonio’s premier theatre company for young audiences, is pleased to serve up a tasty solution to that very dilemma as their iconic Beethoven Hall venue undergoes renovations in early 2026. Starting February 28, San Antonians can devour Magik’s popular production Dragons Love Tacos, based on the best-selling book by Adam Rubin, at one of three local stages. Audiences looking for a bigger, badder play can follow Magik on the Road to schedule a traveling performance of Red Riding Hood, Allison Gregory’s dynamic retelling of the classic folktale, available to book at any location with space for a small stage and perfect for educational and family-friendly events. Busy families can even add a touch of Magik to Valentine’s Day, with a benefit that treats kids to crafts and entertainment while their grownups enjoy a romantic dinner, and summer break, when the theatre will reopen just in time to bring back its blockbuster day camps.

DRAGONS ARE FLYING TO A LOCATION NEAR YOU

In keeping with Magik’s mission to make professional children’s theatre accessible, the company is pleased to stage Dragons Love Tacos at three locations around San Antonio this Spring. In late February, the production lands at the Carver Center’s intimate Jo Long Theatre in Dignowity Hill. Spring Break will be a whole lot spicier with Dragons Love Tacos at Texas A&M University San Antonio’s auditorium in mid-March. The “residency on the road” concludes at San Pedro Playhouse’s Russell Hill Rogers Theatre in early May.

‘But wait!’ those familiar with the story might think, ‘that book is only a few pages long. How can it entertain an audience for a whole hour?’ It’s true that Dragons Love Tacos’ premise is simple: a boy and his dog throw a taco party for dragons that goes up in flames thanks to some tongue-tingling salsa. But the folks at Magik have been cooking up some spicy surprises to beef up the stage adaptation and make the book’s illustrations fly off the page, including all-new cast, costumes and choreography. Directing the play, Angie Hernandez brings the taco-loving tale to life with epic dragons, fiery special effects and zany energy. “I want the audience to feel like they’re part of the controlled chaos of this dragon taco party. Through all our movement and choreography, one thing is clear: partying with dragons is never boring.”

INVITE RED RIDING HOOD TO VISIT

You don’t need to love dragons or tacos to catch Magik around town this Spring. In fact, from February 2 through the end of July*, it’s easier than ever to bring Magik Theatre to you with expanded dates for their touring production of Red Riding Hood. Not just available to schools, Magik’s touring shows can be produced indoors or outdoors for any group seeking out family-friendly entertainment to enhance their event or programming, as long as there’s room for a 20’ x 20’ stage. And you’ll want to welcome in this fresh, funny retelling of Little Red Riding Hood’s saga with the Big, Bad Wolf. “We approach the show like a shared adventure—for the actors and the audience,” says director Devon Moreno, “Alison Gregory’s script is full of twists that challenge what we think we know about the classic tale. Just when you think you know what’s coming next, especially if you remember Red Riding Hood from your own childhood, she takes it in a totally unexpected direction.” Along the way, audiences will marvel at costume quickchanges, prop transformations and interactive aspects that spotlight creative collaboration and spark plenty of post-show discussions. Little ones need not worry, the scariest thing about this wolf might just be his ego. Email info@magiktheatre.org or call (210) 227-2751 to learn more and schedule a show. Magik On the Road touring shows are eligible for grants covering up to 50 percent of the booking fee through Texas Commission on the Arts.

*Magik on the Road performances are not available March 7-15, May 23-31

THE POWER OF MAGIKAL THINKING

Last year, lengthy public construction projects right outside of Magik’s home in Beethoven Hall had an outsized effect on ticket sales to the theatre’s mainstage productions, creating an unforeseen funding gap. Happily, the community rallied around the performing arts pillar and raised just over the $300,000 necessary to keep Magik and its mission of inspiring children through live, literature-based theatre going strong. The theatre plans to reopen just in time for Magik Summer Camps, running from June 1 – August 7 for rising kindergarten through 12th grade students. With upgraded seats, new HVAC and more ADA-compliant features, Magik’s longtime mainstage will be more accessible and comfortable than ever! In the meantime, catch the theatre company around town and stay-tuned for the new season announcement.
