KRTU
KRTU, Trinity University’s member-supported radio station, specializes in diverse, locally-curated music programming that showcases regional musicians, with a focus on community outreach and education.
Managed by the San Antonio Parks Foundation, the Japanese Tea Garden located at 3853 N. St. Mary’s Street is one of the city’s hidden gems. Free and open to the public 365 days per year, the garden is home to year-round multicultural programming along with the Jingu House Cafe. In addition to managing the Japanese Tea Garden, SAPF works to support and enhance parks in San Antonio and Bexar County through free public programming in parks and park improvement projects.
While maintaining free admission and fair artist wages is challenging as production costs continue to climb, the value and joy these intimate concerts create for the community is palpable as each guest ascends the limestone stairs, or ramp, to the upper garden.
Fortunately, The Aguirre Law Firm, PLLC, a San Antonio based firm, has signed on to support the 2023 fall series ensuring another fall filled with the enchanting sounds of Jazz In The Garden. For attendees who wish to contribute at an individual level, a $5 suggested donation is accepted at the entrance.
Series Lineup:
On Friday, September 8 make your way to the former limestone quarry to enjoy a live performance by Carbonlily. A pure and fresh talent, Carbonlily masterfully recreates music combining styles of soft rock, neo-soul, and early jazz. It’s no wonder people are raving about her timeless vocals and unique renditions of the cover songs we all know and love!
Grammy nominated drummer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, band leader, composer and arranger, Gerry Gibbs performs with his newest ensemble, Thrasher People on Friday, October 13. His father, jazz vibraphone legend and band leader, Terry Gibbs is among the earliest pioneers of the be-bop era.
The Bluprint makes their Jazz In The Garden debut on Friday, November 3, closing out the fall series. An instrumental R&B group with heavy jazz & funk influence, The Bluprint formed in the summer of 2020. This seven-piece collective is directly inspired by the works of musical giants such as D’Angelo, Miles Davis, and Tower of Power while also forming their own sound in the shape of modern-day superstars Lucky Daye and Mac Ayres.
Guests are encouraged to bring their own lawn chair or blanket for seating and may arrive as early as 5:30 PM to the garden where they’ll find food and beverages available for purchase from the Jingu House Café. A percentage of sales goes back to preserve the historic garden. Outside food and beverage is not permitted. Leashed pets are welcome.
Additionally, attendees will find a new offering in the lower garden area from 5:30 PM to 8 PM – a vendor market curated by The Texas Market, showcasing local artisan makers and their wares. KRTU and SAPF Members may attend an exclusive Member Experience 5:30-6:30 PM with complimentary beverage sampling and appetizers.
