It’s “A Celebration of Hollywood” the Whole Family Will Love on May 11th
It’s “A Celebration of Hollywood” though music and The South Texas Symphonic Orchestra invites you to join them!
South Texas Symphonic Orchestra (STXSO), has been lauded for their exceptional and unique symphonic concerts performed by a stellar cast of professionally-trained musicians, led by award-winning conductor, Dr. Ronnie Sanders, also the orchestra’s artistic director.
The upcoming concert, “A Celebration of Hollywood,” takes place on Saturday, May 11 at 7:00 pm at The University of Texas San Antonio and will feature music from iconic movies and musicals, such as E.T., Star Wars, Hamilton and Frozen (see full concert details below). Per usual, this concert is FREE to the general public, with VIP seats available for a nominal fee.
“This concert is a great one to bring the kids to, but really, these pieces are beloved by all,” says Dr. Ronnie Sanders. “We’re particularly looking forward to our tribute to John Williams, who is more than just a composer. With just a few notes, from the movie Jaws for example, he has created idiomatic sounds that are identifiable worldwide. It’s rare to be able to consistently elicit such strong emotional responses with music the way he has throughout his career.”
Dr. Sanders explains when choosing the program for each concert, he looks at three important things: what the audience would most enjoy listening to, what would challenge and bring joy to the members of the orchestra, and finally what he, himself, would like to conduct. In this case, the line-up for “A Celebration of Hollywood” ticked all the boxes for a fantastical, light-hearted experience.

ABOUT CONDUCTOR DR. RONNIE SANDERS
Hailed by Diane Windler as “a conductor with authority on the podium,” Ronnie Sanders made his Carnegie Hall conducting debut in a critically acclaimed performance with the New England Philharmonic Orchestra in 2005. Sanders studied at the Juilliard School in New York City and holds a master’s degree in conducting from the University of Houston and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Boston University. Sanders served as a state commissioner for the Texas Commission on the Arts from 2011 – 2018.
Sanders was privileged to have been personally coached by Maestro Milton Katims, conductor of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra from 1954 – 1976. Katims was a conducting protégé of Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini. Not only is Sanders an established orchestral conductor, he has conducted opera, ballet, concerti, choral works and numerous musicals. His vision for the South Texas Symphonic Orchestra is to serve our local community of musicians who are highly skilled and have a passion to perform at the highest artistic levels.
