New Picture Perfect Fall Exhibition: Anouk Masson Krantz: “American Cowboys” Opens at the Briscoe Sept. 29
This new picture perfect Fall Exhibition at the Briscoe Western Art Museum, “Anouk Masson Krantz: American Cowboys”, is an intimate and breathtaking reality of today’s cowboys.
Step into the intimate lives and culture of today’s cowboys through a showcase of stunning black and white photographs at the Briscoe Western Art Museum during Anouk Masson Krantz: “American Cowboys”, on view Sept. 29, 2023 – Jan. 22, 2024. Highlighting the enduring traditions around ranching and rodeo life from an outsider’s perspective, the exhibition reflects the greatest virtues of America’s heritage, captured by the celebrated photographer on solo journeys across the American West. The photographer will kick off the exhibition during a preview party on Sept. 28 and lead a tour of the exhibition on Sept. 29.
American Cowboys provides an inspiring homage to the pioneering spirit that is alive and well in today’s modern world through more than 100 photographs by photographer Anouk Masson Krantz, a French fine-art photographer and author based in New York City. Best known for her American Western work, she has logged more than 125,000 miles traveling the West by herself in her quest to reveal the authentic daily lives of humble and virtuous American cowboy. Krantz’s photography has received worldwide acclaim, including the 2023 Western Heritage Award for her latest artbook, “Ranchland: Wagonhound”.
“The exhibition offers a fresh and contemporary perspective of the cowboy culture, the families, men, women, children as well as rodeo and ranching communities in the heartland of the great American West and beyond,” explains Liz Jackson, President and CEO of the Briscoe Western Art Museum. “The images share today’s West from the vantage point of an outsider, yet the intimacy and perspective share how the spirit of the West, and how these cowboys – and cowgirls – and their families truly live and work.”
Exploring the American West Mile by Mile
Raised in France, Krantz moved to New York in the late 1990s. After years of work in the consumer luxury market, she began pursuing photography fulltime in 2001. A lifelong fascination with the American West inspired her to begin traveling the West in 2004. Krantz explains, “I wanted to see how these American cowboys live, how they work, what they love about their lives that keeps them there, and what they aspire to achieve.”
Renowned for her large-scale contemporary photography and use of space that defines her elegant, minimalistic style, the international photographer and author has developed several notable bodies of work, including “West: The American Cowboy” (2019), “American Cowboys” (2021), which includes a forward by famed writer/director/producer Taylor Sheridan, and “Ranchland: Wagonhound” (2022), with a forward by noted naturalist and author Gretel Ehrlich and a new poem written for “Ranchland” by legendary Texas cowboy poet Russell “Red” Steagall.
Krantz’s photographs have received International Photography Awards and International Monochrome Awards and can be seen in prominent galleries and museums worldwide.
A little more about the author Anouk Masson Krantz:
Krantz was named to Cowboys & Indians magazine’s Trailblazing Women of the West list last week. She also grew up riding so when she hits the trail with these cowboys, they often bring her into experience some of the more difficult tasks of the day – which requires being a skilled rider.
The exhibition opens at the Briscoe with an exclusive preview party featuring remarks from Krantz on Sept. 28. Krantz will also lead a tour of the exhibition and sign copies of her books during an event on Sept. 29.

Anouk Masson Krantz: “American Cowboys” Artist Tour and Book Signing

See Anouk Masson Krantz: American Cowboys through the eyes of the photographer herself as Krantz leads a tour of the exhibition and shares details behind the images that reflect the virtue and heritage of the great American West. Following the tour, Krantz will sign copies of her book, “American Cowboys”, the inspiration behind the exhibition. The tour is included with museum admission and is free for museum members. The book will be available for purchase in the Briscoe’s Hendler Family Museum Store.

Celebrate Cowboy Life All Year Long at the Briscoe
An oasis of Western beauty along San Antonio’s famed River Walk, the Briscoe campus includes the McNutt Sculpture Garden and features 35 sculptures portraying various aspects of Western life. The museum’s collection inside the beautifully restored historic building that once housed the San Antonio Public Library spans 14 galleries, with special exhibitions, events and the Hendler Family Museum Store, providing art, culture, history and entertainment. The Briscoe is open Thursday through Monday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and closed to the public on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
