Delightful SA Youth Ballet Presents Inaugural Ballet Brunch & Ball and Prepares for 2023’s Nutcracker Auditions
San Antonio Youth Ballet, a nonprofit program of the San Antonio Ballet School, has some exciting events coming up in August for the San Antonio community as well as aspiring young ballet dancers, not to mention adults of all ages.
BALLET BRUNCH & BALL
This inaugural event, which is a fundraiser, takes place on Sunday, August 20th at 11:30 am, with an 11:00 am VIP social hour option, at The Veranda in Castle Hills. General admission will include a brunch with a variety of delectable options, a silent auction, formal presentation about the upcoming season, dance performance and a ball.
“This is our very first Ballet Brunch and Ball and also the first youth ballet fundraiser of its kind to my knowledge, which makes it unique,” says Danielle Campbell Steans, Director of the San Antonio Youth Ballet. “The funds raised will go towards scholarships and a youth company trip to the premier American Ballet Theatre, giving our students a chance to meet and work with renowned ballet dancers like Misty Copeland, who is the first African American principal dancer there. It’s a huge opportunity for our students to dream big!”
This event is open to all ages and hopeful young dancers are not only welcome, but encouraged, which is why this is an afternoon event.
“I really wanted to create an experience that inspires young dancers and allows them to get up close and personal with the established dancers, as well as myself and company choreographers. I’ve been going to ballets since I was six months old, so I believe that exposure to the arts is important and the earlier, the better,” says Steans.

OPEN AUDITIONS for The NUTCRACKER
On Saturday, August 26, San Antonio Youth Ballet will host auditions, as they ramp up for this season’s Nutcracker Suites performance, which will return to the historic Scottish Rite Auditorium with live accompaniment by the South Texas Symphonic Orchestra. The chosen dancers will perform new choreography by the talented Husan Wong with direction by Danielle Campbell Steans. Rehearsals begin weekends, starting September (ages 8+) and October (ages 3+). Only a limited number of cast members will be accepted.
“The Nutcracker is also a story of diversity, specifically when Clara travels to the land of sweets and experiences different cultures and countries, and our company truly represents that diversity. It’s a key component of who we are. We have three African American dancers, a Chinese American dancer and a few Mexican American dancers,” says Steans.
To that end, the San Antonio Youth Ballet is bilingual with two teachers from the National Ballet of Cuba
