We treasure creativity and individuality in our children and finding a school that lets their unique talents shine is one of the most important decisions of their early lives. The nonprofit School Discovery Network (formerly San Antonio Charter Moms) exists to help parents and caregivers navigate San Antonio’s ever-expanding educational landscape, where budding botanists, ingenious inventors and precocious performers can find their perfect school fit among affordable options from charter and magnet campuses to private, microschools and homeschool programs. The organization’s blockbuster, free, family-friendly School Discovery Day at the DoSeum on Saturday,  January 24, is the perfect event to learn more about all the local learning opportunities available to San Antonio’s children, while having an inspiring day at one of the nation’s leading children’s museums, complete with exclusive access to exhibitions, special activities, and refreshments.

A NEW ERA OF EDUCATIONAL CHOICE

Over the past few years, public school districts have closed campuses, high-quality schools of choice have proliferated and, most recently, Texas has created Texas Educational Freedom Accounts (TEFAs), providing thousands of dollars to eligible families to help fund private school tuition, homeschool needs and supportive services. San Antonio now has some 280 schools of choice, ranging from SAISD magnet and open-enrollment campuses to nationally-recognized charter networks to specialized academies for athletes and artists.

School Discovery Network has grown alongside San Antonio’s increasingly diverse educational landscape, so much so that the organization recently rebranded to reflect its more inclusive mission. Considered the leading local authority on all types of schools, School Discovery Network provides easy access to extensive, unbiased school resources including an interactive schools map, district profiles, online discussion groups, education policy updates and a new individual consultation service. School Discovery Network is committed to making their information as accessible as possible, including bilingual event staff, information and consultation specialists.

SCHOOL DISCOVERY DAYS: A ONE-STOP RESOURCE FOR FAMILIES

The annual, in-person School Discovery Days gather representatives of more than 40 school networks and related organizations to answer questions about what learning models they offer, what makes their school unique, how to schedule a visit and how to apply. New this year are complimentary onsite one-on-one consultations, during which School Discovery Network staff can advise on enrollment, participating schools and educational policy.

Organizations at the DoSeum School Discovery Day range from charter schools to Pre-K 4 SA campuses to private schools and homeschooling consultants. Participating top-rated schools, many of which are free schools of choice, such as NESID Magnet Schools and Valor Education, as well as those accepting TEFA tuition, such as St. George Episcopal School and San Antonio Catholic Schools, will be in attendance. Evaluation consultants AIM Educate can advise on options for students suspected to have learning differences, and organizations like the American Federation for Children and Odyssey (the state’s official technology partner for TEFA) can assist with questions about affordability and private school choice. Parents and caregivers interested in a small community driven learning environment can meet with Primer, a national network of microschools. Like all School Discovery Days, the DoSeum event is packed with partner activities and fun to keep kids entertained, and early registrants will enjoy free access to the DoSeum, as well as free food truck fare from 9 am – noon. Pre-registration is strongly advised as free DoSeum admission is limited to the first 1,000 pre-registered families.

Timed to coincide with National School Choice Week, the January 24 School Discovery Day may be the starting point for parents and caregivers, the learning doesn’t have to stop there—the final School Discovery Day of this series will be held at Hemisfair on March 7, and is a great way to follow-up on final questions for schools still accepting applications.
