County Line is Famous for Their Outstanding Texas Barbecue but They Also Offer a Delicious Grilled Menu, Innovative Cocktails & Eye-Popping Catering Options
The County Line has been servin’ up legendary award-winning, slow-smoked bar-b-q since 1975. They’re famous for their big meaty ribs, extra lean brisket, and spicy German sausage. I was first introduced to County Line in San Antonio when they opened on the two-lane road called Loop 1604, the soon-to-be second loop around San Antonio, close to highway 281 in the early eighties. As soon as they opened up, this new BBQ eatery quickly became the place to go for good Texas cue. It was pretty much the only reason folks ventured this far north of the city. The restaurant seemed a little “out in the sticks” as we would say then.
The menu was printed on a replica of a “Big Chef” writing tablet which many of the older population will remember from their early childhood school days. The eatery quickly became known for their fresh homemade bread, served warm out of the oven with real butter, their big meaty beef ribs that you could barely finish and their homespun, boozy milkshakes. They served things in a family style spread that would fill up the table and there would always be leftovers. The restaurant became the place to see and be seen so much so that there was always a line waiting to get in.
Learn to Speak Texas
It was also a must to visit the bathroom “to learn how to speak Texas” from a tape that would run continually with humorous dialog.
Unfortunately, this location is no longer open, however there are two other locations in San Antonio. One on the Riverwalk located at 111 W. Crockett St. #104 and one at IH-10 at 4334 Hyatt Pl Dr. For this review, I will be talking about the location at IH-10.
Located on IH-10 just three miles from Fiesta Texas, the County Line on IH-10 represents the next generation of County Line food and fun. The restaurant is surrounded by a comfortable porch with a heavily landscaped patio. It is out here that you can often listen to some great live music which is free with a donation to the San Antonio Food Bank. At the present, due to the Covid virus, the live concerts are on hold. They are hoping they can start them up again in 2022. You can stay posted here.
The County Line Grill
And, as I stated earlier, there’s more than just great BBQ on their menu. They also have some tempting grilled selections. Their grilled Tenderloin or the Ribeye are good choices and both are very tender. I really like the Grilled Salmon which is either a 6oz or 12oz serving. And the grilled Vegetable Kabob makes a great Vegetarian or Vegan option. Grilled plates are served with their complimentary bread, side salad or Caesar Salad, beans & your choice of one side. If you like baked potatoes, they have generous ones with all the toppings.
Southern plates are a big hit here as well. Both the Chicken Fried Steak and Chicken Fried Chicken are excellent. The Garlic Mashed Red Skin Potatoes are perfect with all the white gravy. Just like grandma used to make and be sure to get a side of fried okra or mac and cheese.
The Special Cocktails
Their hand crafted cocktail can help you unwind on a summer afternoon. One of the best for cooling off on the patio is the Spiked Lemonade made with a heavy hand of Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Paula’s Texas Lemon Liqueur, and Secret Recipe Lemonade. Try it with Mango Puree, Strawberry Puree, or Prickly Pear for a Texas twist. I also like the County Line’s Day Drinker Old Fashioned made with Treaty Oak Day Drinker Bourbon, Pecan Orgeat, and Angostura Bitters. You can thank me later!
Large Groups & Catering
The restaurant is available for private events and catering 7 day a week. Whether you are hosting a cocktail party, company get-together or a rehearsal dinner, they are ready to help. Their ample sized party room can adjust to any size group. And the oversized fireplace makes it a great backdrop for you to enjoy their legendary barbecue, signature cocktails and excellently crafted, eye-popping party bites like small plate assortments and things like Heirloom Tomato, Mozzarella, Basil and Lemon Gel or a Watermelon, Mint & Feta bites!
Yes, County Line at IH-10 is ready to feed you or your group in every way. You can count on them to do it right. Whatever your needs are, it is sure to be delicious.
About the Owner & President
Owner and president of The County Line, Don “Skeeter” Miller started working his way up the restaurant’s ladder in 1975 when the eatery first opened. Since then he has received several honors including becoming TRA’s Restauranteur of the Year in 2010, being an inductee to the Texas Restaurant Association’s Hall of Honor in 2014 and being a recipient of the Carmelo Award in 2021.
The Carmelo Mauro Award is an annual recognition, given by the Texas Restaurant Foundation (TRF) in the spirit of generosity. And this year the generosity had multiple definitions.
1. Scholarships provided to culinary students for college from fundraising and creating charitable events.
2. Advocacy work done on governmental issues on the local, state and federal level.
3. Giving endless time to the Texas Restaurant Association to mentor and help restaurateurs coming up in the industry.
