Vilarnau Cavas are Born in a Small, Artisanal Winery Outside of Barcelona
Vilarnau Winery specializes in high quality cavas and shares its innovative character with one of Spain’s most dynamic cities, Barcelona. Originally located in the town center of Sant Sadurni D’Anoia, the heart of Cava, these bubbly wines first started in 1949, the year of my birth.
Made in the traditional méthode champenoise, the Vilarnau bottles honor their Catalan roots with wrapping that reflects the avant-garde imagery of Antoni Gaudí.
While the cava itself has been organic for quite some time, the organic seal has been approved for the Brut and soon, the bottles in the U.S. market will showcase the organic label with the Rose soon to follow.
The Vilarnau estate is situated outside of Sant Sadurni D’Anoia in the highest point of the area Espiells, 200m above sea level. It is this higher altitude that give the grape a slower maturation thereby making it more acidic.
Vilarnau gets its name from the Vila Arnau family whose house lies on the banks of the river Anoia where the vineyard is today.
The Vilarnau team is focused on the quality of the base wine so they manage the entire process starting with the vineyard, in which every vine is treated individually to achieve an optimum balance of leaves, bunches and water. The vineyard works with many grape verities. In fact, they were the first to introduce Pinot Noir to the region. However, they are continually trying to keep authenticity by using local verities and traditional techniques in the winemaking process.
Vilarnau has been part of the González Byass group since 1982. Vilarnau cavas are imported by González Byass USA and are distributed nationally, including being available on wine.com. For further information, please visit: www.vilarnau.es.
They recently introduced me to two of the Vilarnau Cavas for a wine review.
Note: Both these cavas mentioned here are suitable for vegans!
• Vilarnau Brut Reserva NV
Varietals: 50% Macabeo, 35% Parellada, 15% Xarel.lo
Straw to pale yellow color with a nice steam upon opening. Pours with small, fine bubbles that fill the mouth. On the nose it has a complex aroma of fruit (apples) and grape. Smooth texture on the palate with both tart and sweet mingling together. Serve very chilled. Best as an aperitif or with seafood or pasta.
• Vilarnau Brut Reserva Rosé NV
Varietals: 85% Garnacha, 15% Pinot Noir
Beautiful pale pink color with medium bubbles. Opens with good aromatic complexity. On the nose it has primary aromas of berries, mainly strawberries. In the palate it is fruity and smooth but not to sweet. It goes well with pizza, pasta and paella. Serve well chilled!
Both Vilarnau Cavas I tried are very good wines at an excellent price point. I can make every occasion special with these bubbly wines.
