Velvet Taco Packs Globally Inspired Ingredients into a Tortilla for an Eclectic Array of Spices and Flavors
Velvet Taco is now open in San Antonio. This one-of-a-kind taco concept lets you explore the edge of the multi-regional and multi-cultural boundaries of tacos!
Don’t expect Tex-Mex at this fun taco eatery! These scratch tacos aren’t yo mama’s street tacos…these are velvet tacos! These are one-of-a-kind tacos that use premium ingredients and are served up in a crazy fast-casual atmosphere.
Their concept is that tacos don’t have to be a tex-mex cuisine. Here they use global flavors to make them a world cuisine. By using the freshest ingredients, they want you to get a delicious experience. By incorporating different spices and flavors and putting them into a tortilla, you will taste the cuisine of Velvet Taco.
Velvet Taco has opened up two locations in San Antonio:
The Pearl, 103 W Grayson Street San Antonio, TX 78212
The Rim, 5515 N Loop 1604 W # 105 San Antonio, TX 78232
I stopped into the Pearl location to give this funky new taco place a try! The atmosphere was definitely made fun and lively with the music that greets you at the door. You pick what you want from the blackboard when you walk in, then place your order at the counter. Everyone was very friendly and answered all my questions to help me place my order.
They have chicken, beef, pork, fish and vegetarian tacos and even some gluten-free options! They also have a few sides to choose from. We started with the Blue Chips and Queso Blanco which is both gluten-free and vegetarian. The queso had a slight heat kick from their Velvet Taco heat sauce and salsa verde. The charred tomato salsa and cilantro sprig gave it added flavor. Would definitely order this creamy dip again.
Some other creative sides include:
‘Elote’ corn, Crisp tots and a local egg and Barbacoa beef nachos.
Our chick pick was the Rotisserie Chicken with more queso blanco, roasted corn pico (the corn was fresh off the cobb) charred tomato poblano salsa and cilantro all stuffed into a fresh made corn tortilla. (gluten-free)
We also went for the most popular item, the Spicy Tikka Chicken, crisp tenders, spicy tikka sauce, buttered cilantro basmati rice, raita crema and Thai basil wrapped in a flour tortilla.
The Pork pick was the Cuban Pig with gruyere cheese, slow-roasted pulled pork, honey ham, peppered bacon, grain mustard, and house brined pickles on a flour tortilla. Love those pickles!
The seafood pick was the Shrimp & Grits, creole remoulade, blackened shrimp, crispy pepper Jack cheese grits, charred tomato salsa and micro cilantro on a corn tortilla. (my favorite) They grits here were a little unusual. They were made into small balls the size of the shrimp and fried. Interesting and delicious!
For die-hard tex-mex fans, some of the flavor combinations may take a little getting used to, but I say give it a try and discover a new cuisine.

Of course you will probably want to get a boozy libation with your meal. The Kick Ass Margarita used a premium blanco tequila, orange liqueur, fresh lime juice and agave nectar, all combined perfectly to put you into the after work mode. Other alcohol libations include Ranch Water, Paloma cocktail and local and Mexican beer.
They also offer craft sodas and fruit infused ice teas.
