Prix de Lausanne Finalist and Royal Ballet Student Kate Thomas is Taking the Dance World By Storm
Kate will dance as the Sugar Plum Fairy, starting Friday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m., as The Children’s Ballet of San Antonio makes the holidays sweeter through a special partnership with Bird Bakery as they bring the “Children’s Nutcracker” home for the holidays. The world recognized organization allows families to share the treasured holiday tradition in the comfort of their own home. Viewers can safely watch the inspiring, award winning cast while creating lasting memories with Bird Bakery’s Nutcracker-themed cookie decorating sets and intermission tutorial video so little viewers can learn how to design the perfect cookie. Or make it a meal with sandwich platters to go to include Nutcracker shaped PB&Js. The fundraising event is designed to support the Children’s Ballet’s effort to elevate the city’s sanding in the arts on the world stage. CBSA’s countless community outreach efforts do so much to instill a love of dance in audiences of all ages and abilities through their wonderful spirit of inclusivity while serving as a gateway to young dancers interested in pursuing a career in professional dance. It’s the ultimate Pas de Deux when 15-year-old Kate Thomas makes not one, but two splashes overseas. First, the Children’s Ballet of San Antonio (CBSA) student was recently named a finalist in the prestigious Prix de Lausanne competition held annually in Lausanne, Switzerland. This nationally renowned event is a resume building opportunity for young dancers ages 15-18 who wish to pursue a professional career in classical ballet. Only 83 of the coveted finalist positions are available, and with close to 400 of the top dancers across 43 countries vying for the top spots, the competition is fierce. Thanks to years of training with The Children’s Ballet of San Antonio under the watchful eye of founder and five-time Youth America Grand Prix Outstanding Teacher award winner Vanessa Bessler, Thomas was ready!
“When I opened the e-mail I was running around my house crying tears of joy,” says the talented ballerina. “I am so excited to compete in this incredibly prestigious event and I am thrilled for my future in ballet through the networking the competition provides.”
This award comes on the heels of Thomas’s invitation to attend the Royal Ballet of London, where she was scheduled to begin in September. Due to Covid restrictions however, Thomas had to postpone her studies abroad until January.
“The chance to study in London and expand my knowledge of ballet is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” she says with enthusiasm. “When I found out I was accepted I didn’t believe it was real.”
Thomas has been dancing with Bessler and the CBSA since the age of seven, and in that time has received numerous scholarships to such prestigious schools as the Bolshoi Ballet, Ballet West in Utah, Houston Ballet, and the Colorado Ballet Academy, to name a few. A three-time first place winner at the YAGP Regionals, the talented performer was among the top 24 dancers in the world invited to the final round at Lincoln Center, New York for several years.
“It is a delight to work with dancers like Kate,” says Bessler proudly. In addition to being an extremely gifted dancer, she uses her success to encourage and build up her fellow dancers rather than make them feel ‘less than.’ She exemplifies our philosophy as an organization which focuses on inclusivity and diversity as much as talent and skill.”
With such an impressive resume combined with the experience of someone twice her age, Thomas is poised for greatness. “I thoroughly enjoy being on stage and expressing stories through dance,” she says. “I hope to continue through college and beyond.”
