Sabor! Cocina Mexicana Restaurant Offers a Menu Full of Deliciousness to Satisfy Your Mexican Food Cravings
Located on the northwest side of town in the Bandera Festival Shopping Center next to the Precinct 2 Courthouse, Sabor! Cocina Mexicana is cooking up traditional Mexican food and Tex-Mex favorites. This eatery may be small in size, but the menu is large.
Owner Luis Vasquez has been in the restaurant business most of his life. Starting as a dishwasher at a restaurant in Mexico over 20 years ago, he has now followed his dream of opening his own restaurant. Luis has brought his favorite dishes from Mexico to Sabor! Cocina Mexicana while also incorporating Tex-Mex favorites into his popular menu.
The restaurant serves both breakfast and lunch. Breakfast dishes like tacos, tortas, burritos and plates are available ALL DAY! The breakfast tacos include the usual variety like, papa & egg or chorizo & egg, but you will also find not-so-common tacos like the nopal & egg ( prickly pear cactus) or machacado (egg and dried beef). If you are looking for something a little different in the morning, this should be your stop.
One specialty on the menu is the Mole Chicken Enchiladas. This is two enchiladas topped with mole sauce which is served with refried beans and Mexican rice. For those people not familiar with mole sauce, it is a very rich, savory sauce made with a mixture of different chiles, chocolate, and spices. There are as many variations of this sauce as there are cooks in Mexico. I love mole sauce with its sweet and spicy flavors and I recommend you try it, but it may take a little getting used to.
The burritos are customer favorites here and one in particular is the Carnitas Big Burrito. And it is big!! A giant flour tortilla is stuffed with fresh carnitas, sautéed onions, rice and beans and topped with chile con queso. This dish is mucho bueno. When you eat this you are the one who will be stuffed.
Another dish to try is the Pollo Enrollado, a rolled chicken breast filled with bacon, white cheese and pico de gallo, then topped with a delicious creamy cilantro sauce. Served with a small salad, white rice and borracho beans, this one is a nice combo.
The Chile Relleno plate is a breaded poblano pepper stuffed with cheese & picadillo, topped with spicy Ranchero sauce and white cheese and served with rice & beans. This dish is just spicy enough to not overpower any “gringo” out there.
The Carnitas a la Plancha is a dish of carnitas stuffed tacos in flour tortillas, topped with two sunny side up eggs. A spicy Ranchero sauce tops it all off! It comes with a side salad. Yes, this one is delicious!
And before you ask, yes, they do have dessert. Their Sopapillas are the lightest I have ever had. Luis says it is because he bakes them instead of frying them. Drizzled with honey and dusted with cinnamon & powdered sugar, just pick them up with your fingers and eat them. (And it is OK to lick your fingers.) Then there are the Churros! This crispy fried pastry is served warm and covered in cinnamon sugar. The ones at Sabor! are filled with a dulce de leche for a delicious gooey addition. I found these to be a little piece of heaven.
Either one of these desserts is sure to please the most discerning dessert lover.
