Mixtli’s New Restaurant in Southtown San Antonio will Feature a Larger Dining Room, New Bar, and a Circulating Agave Cart
The team behind Mixtli, the nationally lauded progressive Mexican restaurant, announced today that the restaurant will be relocating to a bigger space located at 812 South Alamo Street. Following the same ethos as the original Mixtli with a menu that travels from different Mexican regions, the new space will feature a larger dining room, an open kitchen concept, and a new bar complete with a separate bar menu. The new location is slated to open later this fall.
Led by Executive Chefs Rico Torres and Diego Galicia, 2017 FOOD & WINE’s Best New Chefs, the team worked with Villa Park Architects to design the new space which will feature about 30 seats in the dining room.
“When we first opened Mixtli we didn’t know what to expect or how our guests would receive it. Because of its size and the exclusivity of the dinners, it was a difficult reservation to make. Now, seven years later, we are excited to move Mixtli into a larger space with a full bar and make our restaurant much more accessible and inviting. We are proud to be part of the San Antonio food scene and can’t wait to see everyone in our new Southtown location,” said Chef Rico Torres.
The menu will continue to travel from region to region offering a tour of Mexican gastronomy. The menu will still rotate every 45 days, traveling to the various regions and states of Mexico in each one of the dishes. If the state has a border with the ocean, the menu will begin on the coast and work inland, bringing dishes specifically from that region or state. After those 45 days, a new menu is created.
In the new space, Mixtli will feature an agave spirits cart that will circulate around the restaurant from which guests can select the spirit of their choice with a salt to complete the experience. The cart is designed to be both interactive and educational, paying homage to Mexican spirits.
Chef Diego Galicia added, “Every year comes with its challenges and 2020 is no different. Although COVID-19 is a large and unexpected change, we are taking every precaution to make sure our team and our guests are safe and have a memorable experience. We knew moving Mixtli would be a thing to celebrate, but unfortunately, it comes at a time when our industry is hurting. I think San Antonio needs a reason and a place to celebrate the happy moments. Joy and celebrations don’t stop, and if we try our best to ensure our guests’ safety, we can celebrate as we should. We will be ready for our guests’ happy moments as soon as our doors open this fall.”
Mixtli will be located in San Antonio at 812 South Alamo Street, and will be open Tuesday—Saturday with the first seating beginning at 5 p.m. Parking will be available at the restaurant. Service at the current Mixtli will continue through September and reservations can be made through the website.
