Texas’ Most Beautiful Coastal Island, South Padre Island, Starts a New Tradition, Cook Your Catch Day
Most people wouldn’t think of taking off to the beach in the winter. But I actually believe winter is the best time to visit the sunny beaches of South Padre Island. Of course the waters might be a little chilly in winter for most of us water babies, but there are plenty of other things to keep you entertained.
With the abundance of good-eating fish like Grouper, Redfish & Drum in the Laguna Madre Bay, it is the perfect time for fishing without having to go in deeper waters or, for that matter, without even getting wet. And the mention of good-eating fish brings into play MY favorite sport on the island, eating. And with wonderful island restaurants which are highly acclaimed for their fish recipes, South Padre Island is the perfect Gulf-to-Table experience. That’s why avid anglers and cuisine fans of the island have named January 23rd Cook Your Catch Day. There were over 9 island restaurants participating in the inaugural Cook Your Catch Day (which included Sea Ranch Restaurant, The Painted Marlin Grille, and F & B) with even more already signing up for next year’s event.
Thanks to the island’s hub of pretty dedicated anglers to help you land the big one and also some very talented chefs who know how to bring out the best in your fresh catch, this Gulf-to-Table event is a shoe-in.
There are many ways to fish on SPI:
- Bay Fishing
- Jetties Fishing
- Surf Casting
And what type of fish you catch depends on what type of fishing you do. Of course you don’t need a fishing guide to fish, but local guides can be helpful. They know what fish are running, what bait you should use and will even share some of their fishing spots with you. They can’t guarantee you will catch a fish, but they can certainly increase your chances.
Another bonus of the great winter weather is smaller crowds which you will appreciate if you choose to go with a local fishing charter like the Osprey Cruises. This cruise line has several different choices of location pickup depending on whether you want to deep-sea fish or bay fish. And they literally take care of everything for you like; providing all bait and tackle, tips for catching that big one, cleaning fish available, and plenty of room on deck for fishing. Note: you will need to have a Texas Fishing License if you are over 17.
And best of all, even if you don’t land that big one, there are multiple restaurants on SPI with fresh fish on the menu every day.
