200 Young Artists from The Children’s Ballet of San Antonio take the Stage to Perform a Modern Rendition of The Children’s Nutcracker at the Lila Cockrell
WHAT: Join the Children’s Ballet of San Antonio as 200 young artists take the stage to perform a modern rendition of the classic holiday favorite in, “The Children’s Nutcracker.” This full-length production brings to life Tchaikovsky’s beloved score with dazzling costumes, multimedia integrated scenery, award-winning classical dancers, gifted artists of diverse disciplines and abilities (including special needs artists), gymnasts, actors and other performing artists ranging in age from 3 to 19. The performance marks the company’s exciting debut at the Lila Cockrell Theatre and its ninth production to date.
“The Children’s Nutcracker” follows the tale of the traditional “Nutcracker” while focusing on the realities of a modern-day San Antonio family in place of an aristocratic, German family from the 1800s. Drones and other digital gadgets take the place of dolls on the holiday wish-list, and San Antonio traditions are celebrated and showcased.
“Dance is for everyone, the “Children’s Nutcracker” connects with families of the modern age while celebrating the classical ballet master piece, “The Nutcracker,” says Vanessa Bessler, Founder of The Children’s Ballet of San Antonio. Bessler is a former Prima Ballerina and a four-time Youth America Grand Prix Outstanding Teacher Award winner who has created a gateway in San Antonio for young artists interested in pursuing a professional career in dance.
WHO: Since its inception just five years ago, the CBSA has quickly raised the “barre” on the art scene in San Antonio by garnering an impressive and extensive number of “firsts” for the city through recognition, awards, and scholarships from the most prestigious ballet competitions and schools in the world. Last year, CBSA had the largest number of awarded soloists from San Antonio selected to compete in the prestigious Youth America Grand Prix Finals in New York. This summer, five students attended the Royal Ballet School in London, while eight others studied at the award-winning Vaganova Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia, a school that has turned out some of the greatest dancers the world has ever seen, including Baryshnikov.
