Aug 31st VIVA EL PASO Raises Funds for the El Paso Community Foundation’s El Paso Shooting Victims’ Fund at Cherrity Bar Concert
On August 31st, a diverse group of organizations come together with the local music community to raise funds for the El Paso Community Foundation’s El Paso Shooting Victims’ Fund. The fund provides direct financial support to the shooting victims and their families. The all-ages, family-friendly event is a labor of love for lead organizer, Omar Rosel, and SATX Music as they take a stand against the recent violence in El Paso. Cherrity Bar hosts the event this Saturday from 6PM-12AM featuring performances by Azul Barrientos, Los De Esta Noche, Mockingbird Express (full band), and Xenobia. DJ Rambo Salinas of Friends of Sound Records will spin rare 45s for the house tunes. Cherrity’s onsite restaurant, Kuriya Ramen will have regular dinner service for those who come ready to eat.
The event features a children’s activity led by Veronica Castillo Salas who will teach children how to mold clay figurines. This will be a free activity for school-aged children. The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center will be on site registering blood donors. Beer sales of Dorcol Distilling & Brewing Company, Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery, Save The World Brewing Co., and Alamo Beer will be donated to EPCF.
Thank you to our partners: Cherrity Bar, Dorcol Distilling & Brewing Company, Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery, Save The World Brewing Co., Alamo Beer, TechBloc, The National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP), and Asian Real Estate Association of America.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Azul Barrientos is a singer and musician who is keeping Mexican musical traditions alive. Born in Mexico City, she makes her home in San Antonio, where she is an artist in residence at the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, a grassroots arts and cultural organization located on San Antonio’s predominantly Hispanic West Side.
Los De Esta Noche
Formed in 2009, Los de Esta Noche (The Ones From Tonight) is a Latin roots rock band from San Antonio, Texas. Their sound is comprised of Rock, Ska, Cumbia, & Conjunto music. Influenced by the sound and culture of the Mexico border, they blend horns and percussion along with Spanish and English lyrics to make music that will make you move and dance.
Mockingbird Express is a new leaf on a tree with roots that run deep. Based in the traditions of early blues and psychedelia, this power trio explores rock and roll music with fearless and frenzied abandon. The leader of the group is Mockingbird Smith – a Texas native with spiritual and musical heritages that stretch in all directions. Retracing the tracks of the rock trios from a hazy yesteryear, the “King Bird” blazes a new but familiar trail through the wilderness of the modern psychedelic soundscape. Part acid freak-out, part gospel tent revival, the live experience of Mockingbird Express on stage leaves audiences with little to question about the group’s intentions: turn on, turn up, take off.
Jazz-fusion project, Xenobia, debuted earlier this year at Imagine Fest. Made up of UTSA students, most of the band members play multiple instruments. Their wide array of skills and approach to jazz fusion are perfect for the creative band name. Xenobia’s music is mix of jazz, rock, progressive metal, hip hop, funk, Latin and many more. It gives listeners a sense of the surreal while simultaneously keeping them grounded with sounds that feel familiar.
