Auditions Being Held by The Children’s Ballet of San Antonio Aug 24 for The Children’s Nutcracker
Sugarplum dreams can come true for even the youngest dancers thanks to The Children’s Ballet of San Antonio. On Sat., Aug. 24, dancers, gymnasts, actors and performing artists ranging in age from 3 to 19 are invited to audition for the Children’s Ballet of San Antonio’s production of the classic holiday tale, “The Children’s Nutcracker.” This professional-level production will give talented young artists a chance to showcase their skills while working with Master Ballet Teachers and local choreographers.
“We are the only dance company in San Antonio and one of the few in the nation to allow a dancer as young as age seven or eight to have a lead role,” says Vanessa Bessler, who founded the CBSA in 2015. Case in point? Last year’s sold-out production of “The Children’s Nutcracker,” featured both a 12 and 13-year-old in the role of Clara.
Bessler, who also serves as the Artistic Director, is a Bolshoi Ballet and Vaganova method Certified Ballet instructor. One of the youngest Prima Ballerinas to dance in the National Ballet of Panama, this four-time Youth America Grand Prix Outstanding Teacher award winner is committed to making sure that every dancer is given the opportunity to take center stage. Hers is the only fully inclusive company in San Antonio that highlights students with physical and mental disabilities and gives them a place where they too can shine.
A Gateway to Greatness
Since its inception, the CBSA has raised the “barre” on the art scene in San Antonio by garnering an impressive and extensive number of “firsts” for the city through recognition, awards, and scholarships. Last year, CBSA had the largest number of awarded soloists from San Antonio selected to compete in the prestigious Youth America Grand Prix Finals in New York. This summer, five students attended the Royal Ballet School in London, while eight others studied at the award-winning Vaganova Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia, a school that has turned out some of the greatest dancers the world has ever seen, including Baryshnikov.
Auditions for the CBSA production of “The Children’s Nutcracker” will take place Sat., Aug. 24 at the Dance Center of San Antonio, located at 126 W. Rector St., Ste. 120. Registration opens at 1:30 p.m., although online registration is recommended and highly encouraged. For complete details on how to audition for “The Children’s Nutcracker,” go here!
