One of the Best Culinaria Restaurant Weeks Finds Around San Antonio is The Grey Moss Inn
Known for its fine dining and romantic country setting, The Grey Moss Inn has been serving extraordinary food for over 80 years. Anyone in San Antonio and the surrounding area who likes good food, has most likely eaten at this establishment. The restaurant still exists in the original quaint rock summer cottages built so many years ago when the Scenic Loop was a popular playground and summer retreat for wealthy San Antonians.

The restaurant and large patio are housed under the canopy of huge oak trees in the city of Grey Forest just minutes outside of San Antonio but miles away from city life. This idyllic setting that is the Grey Moss Inn gained fame for its combination of Southern hospitality and fine food, thanks to Mary Howell, who founded the Inn in 1929. Even today they hold true to Mary’s tradition of fresh food and still use many of the recipes she originated some 60 years ago. Using only aged beef marinated in their signature “witches brew” then cooked to order over the “Wishing Well” grill on the patio along with home-made pies still made in one of the cottages, it is easy to see why people come from all over to dine here.

So I feel doing Culinary Restaurant Weeks at the Grey Moss Inn is a no-brainer. No where else can you get a delicious 3-course meal in such a wonderful spot.
The starters for dinner were either Gazpacho Soup, a blend of cucumber, celery and cilantro or an Heirloom Tomato salad with cucumber and goat cheese all atop microgreens with pesto vinaigrette.

The entree was a choice of Herb Crusted Mesquite-grilled Scottish Salmon stuffed with blue crab meat & fontina cheese served over their creamy scalloped potatoes with roasted radishes and served with a chive vinaigrette (a $35 option), or a Misquite-grilled bacon wrapped filet with 3 marinated grilled shrimp with truffle fingerling potatoes, garlic Brussels sprouts with a whiskey peppercorn sauce (a $45 option).

And last but certainly not least were the dessert pies. The choice was Strawberry Supreme with ice cream or Praline Parfait with praline ice cream & praline sauce (both from the $35 menu) or Chocolate Pecan Pie with coconut or Caramel Cheesecake with a Strawberry Sauce (both from the $45 menu).

This restaurant has one of the most extensive wine lists (more like an indexed book of wines) I’ve seen with over 500 selections of both white & reds from all over the world. You are guaranteed to find something you like!
The Grey Moss Inn has never been closed and is the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Central Texas. The unique rural charm and romantic setting makes it a favorite spot for celebrations of all types. Reservation are strongly suggested!!
If you are planning on driving to The Grey Moss Inn, a word of caution: the Grey Forest speed limit is posted at 30 MPH and it is strictly enforced.
