Hillside Boutique Hotel will Host Vintage Castroville, a Celebration of Alsatian Wine, Culture, and Cuisine in Honor of Castroville’s 175th Birthday
Take Your Taste Buds on A Journey 175 Years in The Making! You’re invited to take a gastronomical journey through the rich French culture that has shaped one of the most historically significant towns in Texas. On Tuesday, September 10, at 6 p.m., Hillside Boutique Hotel will host Vintage Castroville, a celebration of Alsatian wine, culture, and cuisine in honor of Castroville’s 175th birthday. The evening will begin with a dinner prepared by Hillside Texas Bistro Chef David Hill using locally sourced ingredients, and featuring foods that nod to the city’s Alsatian Heritage. Wines will be selected and paired by wine expert Mathieu Muckensturm, a native of Strasbourg, the capital of Alsace, which is one of the top wine regions in France. Located on the border of Germany and France, Alsace boasts near perfect conditions for wine growing with ancient soils, noble grapes, and with one of the driest climates in France. Famous for its Dry Riesling, the area also produces aromatic vintages with rich textures including a Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, and Cremant d’Alsace, a sparkling wine that is growing in popularity.
“Few wine regions can claim pure expression,” explains Muckensturm. “Alsace is an exception. Every swirl of the glass releases layers of pure fruit, flower or spice, and every sip reveals fresh minerality.”
Guests can gather in the rustic Barrel Room for a pre-dinner drink to take in the historic photos of Castroville lining the walls. During dinner, Chef Hill, along with Muckensturm will walk guests through a culinary adventure, sharing their expertise on the food and wine of Alsace. As an added treat, Hillside Boutique Hotel owner Jana Winkler, member of the Alsatian Pioneers Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, will share highlights and anecdotes from Castroville’s history.
“We are so excited to be part of the city’s birthday celebration and honored to be able to tell our piece of the heritage through good food and wine,” says Winkler.
Like a fine wine, Castroville is aged to perfection. This is a city full of history that dates back to 1844 when it was founded by Henri Castro. The residents take great pride in Castroville’s Alsatian roots, preserving the unique architecture and historic sites that feature more than 300 historic buildings, including The Steinbach House, the oldest structure in Texas.
