Local Tea Shop, Brew’s Lee Tea, Introduces Biodegradable Tapioca Straws
Alamo Heights’ favorite tea station, Brew’s Lee Tea, located at 4009 Broadway St., San Antonio, TX 78209 annouces that after a year of searching, they have finally found an eco-friendly straw option for their teas that are served with tapioca pearls, through a provider in Taiwan.
The U.S. uses 500 million plastic straws every day and is a major contributor to straws becoming the 11th most found ocean trash. Not only do straws pollute our oceans, they harm and even kill marine life. This campaign to reduce straw usage has brought pressure onto businesses to change their ways and provide their customers a new eco-friendly alternative.
A year ago, Brew’s Lee Tea started their journey to become a straw-free establishment. First they introduced a hay option for their regular teas, which they sourced from Hay! Straws, an Oklahoma based company. However, the company had difficulty finding straws that were large enough for their teas that were served with tapioca pearls, or boba. This is a large majority of their inventory purchased.
Over the past year, Brew’s Lee Tea owner, Frances Lee, has been searching for a solution to this problem. Finally, after traveling through Taiwan in search of a provider, Frances has found a source for these larger biodegradable straws.
The unique straws are made of sugarcane fiber and are big enough for Tapioca pearls to fit through. The straws are not only a natural source for the material, but are also biodegradable and harmlessly decompose in the soil. They do not affect the taste of the drink being sipped from them and do not get soggy either.
Conscious business owners like Frances Lee, understand that the hay & sugarcane fiber straws are not as cost effective as plastic straws, but see the profit for the environment as more important than the monetary loss to the company. Frances already uses biodegradable bowls in her tea shop, and is happy to now be 100% environmentally friendly with all of their straws.
