The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center has a hit show on their hands with “Celebrando Tradiciones: An Authentic Dance & Music Experience.” Now in its eigth installment, the monthly show playing everying First Friday has succeeded beyond the Guadalupe’s expectations. “We’ve really been blown away by the response,” says Executive Director Cristina Balli, “every month we are attracting new audience members from the community while also bringing downtown cultural tourists to the Westside for the first time.”

The show, which features the Guadalupe Dance Company and Mariachi Azteca de America, has been welcoming near sold out attendance with several sold-out shows in recent months. Realizing the Guadalupe was home to a historic 320 seat theater and two of the very best performance companies in the region, the artistic staff decided it was time to take their performing arts season to a new level. “In recent years the Guadalupe Dance Company has produced one traditional Ballet Folklorico and one Spanish Flamenco production each year. Between these shows, the company would perform throughout the city and region at both public and private events. While we still perform in the community, while we still perform in the community, we’ve decided to fully embrace our role as the resident professional dance company of the Center by expanding our repertoire and our artistic vision. Our dancers have worked harder than ever before and their dedication is really paying off. Audiences are coming back again and again to see what each new monthly show has in store,” says Dance Program Director Jeannette Chavez who both leads the company and teaches classes in the dance academy.

Key to the show’s success has been the dance company’s partnership with regional Mariachi ensemble Mariachi Azteca de America. Led by Gumecindo “Gino” Rivera who founded Mariachi Azteca de America in 2006, the ensemble brings their regional acclaim and deep understanding of Mariachi music and traditions to the show. “Celebrado Tradiciones has given our Mariachi an opportunity to collaborate artistically at a truly professional level. The result has been a powerful and unique entertainment experience that is rare in San Antonio,” says Rivera.

“The Guadalupe prides itself in presenting authentic cultural programs that truly reflect the heritage of our region. Downtown and the Westside have historically been the cultural epicenters of San Antonio yet there is not a monthly dance and music event in these areas that captures the essence of our Mexican heritage,” says Cristina Balli, “whether you are a native San Antonian, a resident of a near by town, or a visitor to the region, you will have an opportunity every month this year to experience a show like no other in the city. We look forward to seeing our audiences continue to grow as we celebrate our traditions, give voice to our artists, and preserve our culture here at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center.”

A Message from Executive Director, Cristina Balli
Since 1980 the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center has served as San Antonio’s home for Latino, Chicano and Native American arts and culture. Each year over 40,000 arts patrons, community members, and cultural tourists experience the work of the region’s most dynamic Latino artists. Now more than ever San Antonio needs to preserve, nurture, and celebrate its cultural identity. We embrace our role as a bridge for intercultural understanding by presenting festivals that celebrate our traditions, producing exhibits and performances that give voice to our artists, and offering educational programs that preserve our art forms.
