A tradition like no other, Fiesta® San Antonio is a fusion of arts, heritage and culture that culminates every year in April—to honor the memory of the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto. Taking place over 11 days, Fiesta literally has something for everyone with more than 110 events ranging in highlights from music, food, sports and pageantry to military and patriotic observances, exhibits, parades, Fiesta® Royalty and more. This year’s event is April 18th-28th.
Got Medal celebrates San Antonio’s dedication to all things Fiesta-medal related and gives everyone an opportunity to start trading, swapping and scoring medals for 2019. The unmistakable symbols of Fiesta fun—and support for various organizations and causes—traces its roots to 1946, when King Antonio first handed out commemorative coins at River Parades and other Fiesta events. Joske’s department store later started giving out commemorative cardboard holders for the coins, then school kids were began wearing those coins as badges. Then an industrious Texas Cavalier took such creativity into his own hands, adding a ribbon to the coin, giving birth to a shiny new tradition. From those humble beginnings, today’s medals include dangles, movable parts, lights, music, scratch and sniff, glow in the dark and spinning designs. And of course, true aficionados want them all.
Of course, many of those medals raise funds for important causes and organizations. Fiesta is also the “Party with a Purpose” because more than 100 local nonprofit organizations and military units create the more than 100 terrific events that take place. Those nonprofit organizations spend the rest of the year giving back to the community of San Antonio. Each year, Fiesta® San Antonio and the more than 200 local nonprofits directly benefitted by the events held during Fiesta, generate an economic impact of more than $340 million. Best of all, the proceeds stay in San Antonio and fund important local causes that make San Antonio better year-round, including education and scholarships, medical research, historic preservation, senior and children’s services and so much more.
“VIVA FIESTA! We love how our vibrant, amazing city shines even brighter during Fiesta, a season that represents the very best of San Antonio. And giving back to Fiesta® San Antonio Commission through the enjoyment of finely crafted cocktails like our “VIVA!”-tini is the perfect way to celebrate,” says Mark Bohanan. “Fiesta celebrates San Antonio’s past and its future, and Got Medal is a great way for everyone to get in on the fun and help make that future even brighter.”
Bohanan’s support of the Fiesta® San Antonio Commission is just one way the restaurants’ active interest in their guests flows beyond its doors to create a larger sense of community. Bohanan’s champions San Antonio through both business and philanthropic efforts, routinely working with organizations like the Fiesta® San Antonio Commission, the McNay Art Museum, the San Antonio Parks Foundation, the March of Dimes, Say Sí, Las Casas Foundation and more to support a wide array of initiatives and programs that help make San Antonio a city to celebrate every day.
