Pizzini Traditional Family Recipes Showcased at Lala’s Gorditas in San Antonio
Lala’s Gorditas has set a Grand Opening Party date for Saturday, March 9 beginning at 6:45 PM. Two acclaimed musical acts will begin at 7: Santiago Jimenez, Jr. will kick things off and Garrett T. Capps y Los Three Timers will play into the night.
Chef/owner Steven Pizzini is donating a portion of the evening’s proceeds to The San Antonio Lighthouse located just blocks from the restaurant. “I respect the work they do and their mission of empowerment,” explains Pizzini. “We are extremely proud to be part of this vibrant neighborhood and look forward to enriching it any way we can.”
Local musician Garrett T. Capps recently gained national primetime prominence when his song Born in San Antone was featured on the Showtime series Billions. His Americana twang “is a perfect soundtrack for Lala’s San Antonio culinary roots,” says Pizzini. “Having Santiago Jimenez as an opening act is just the pico on the gordita,” he adds.
Lala’s Gorditas is located at 1600 Roosevelt Avenue at School Street. The casual spot features a short menu of long San Antonio Tex-Mex food traditions including gorditas, puffy tacos, guacamole or bean cups, bean rolls and flan. Masa is stone-ground on site daily and all fillings are made by hand. Menu items range from $1.25 – 5.75.
Pizzini’s family founded the city’s original Teka Molino in 1958 (now under different ownership) and legendary The Taco Hut, which shuttered in 1998 after 40 years of popularity. Pizzini has revived many of the original menu items of these iconic spots, and is using family recipes to preserve the well-loved traditional flavors.
Lala’s Gorditas is open 11AM – 9PM Tuesday through Thursday, and 11AM – 10PM Fridays and Saturdays. The restaurant is closed Sundays and Mondays. Free street and surface parking is available; all seating is outdoor at shaded picnic tables.
