Sumo Spring Bash Event Featuring Asian-Themed Fare Hosted by Homegrown Chef

This super fun Sumo event, a fundraiser for future episodes of Homegrown Chef, will feature Asian-themed fare by some of SA’s most exciting chefs and culinary creators. Guests will have the opportunity to opt-in to battle it out, sumo-style.

WHO:  Homegrown Chef is a culinary series and brand that aims to inspire San Antonio and beyond to cook, eat and explore the delicious food scene, from the chefs to the local farms. They have also hosted some amazing events in the past year including a farm-to-table feast at Veg’d Out Urban Farms, a Burger Competition fundraiser for the Chef Cooperatives and exclusive Underground Dinners.

WHAT:  Homegrown Chef is excited to host this upcoming and truly one-of-a-kind event, showcasing some incredible Asian fusion fare and entertainment in the form of Sumo Battles the guests can participate in.

Homegrown Chef host, Chef Edward Villarreal, will be teaming up with some of San Antonio’s most talented chefs and creators, including Chef Dave Terrazas of the San Antonio Botanical Garden, Chef Teddy Liang, Diana and John Anderson of JD’s Chili Parlor and Sara Lauren Hinojosa of Honeysuckle.

These culinary visionaries will be offering a scintillating array of Asian dishes made with locally-sourced ingredients, including a melange of fresh veggies from the San Antonio Botanical Gardens’ culinary garden. Please see menu below.

Additionally, guests can opt-in to battle it out, sumo-style (in sumo suits), for an evening of fun entertainment.

This event is a fundraiser, and funds will go towards production of future episodes of Homegrown Chef, the first of which will be featuring the important culinary programming at the San Antonio Botanical Garden to teach children and families how and why to eat healthy fresh foods. This ties in to Homegrown Chef’s greater mission to teach people about the importance of knowing where their food comes from – knowing the farmer, knowing the farm.

Pork Dumplings (made with Peaceful Pork), smoked garlic, shallot, ancho in a chili tea dipping sauce

Chilified Bahn Xeo (Happy Pancakes!), chicken, plum wine, smoked garlic, hatch chilis, yellow and red carrots, smoked beets, lettuce, kale ginger plum sauce

Sara Lauren Hinojosa of Honeysuckle

Match Milkshake, homemade mochi, white chocolate pocky, dehydrated kumquat
