Popular San Antonio Chef Opens New Restaurant Paying Homage to Upscale Southern Comfort Food
Chef Jeff White along with his wife Jenn are due to open their newest and biggest venture yet, Eastside Kitchenette on January 9th. The restaurant, which is housed in a building built in 1910, is located at 2119 N. Interstate 35 at Rogers Rd in the historic Government Hill neighborhood, blocks from the Pearl. The building has been completely renovated for Eastside Kitchenette, and offers off-street parking. Patio seating for 30-40 guests overlooks the downtown skyline; inside seating can accommodate 80.
Chef White brings 32 years of kitchen experience honed in the early years of Biga, L’Etoile, and Ascenar. After five years as executive chef at Boiler House, Jeff left Boiler House to helm Tucker’s Kozy Korner alongside his wife, Jenn, whose 20 years in the hospitality industry includes leadership positions in hotel and restaurant management and in hospitality marketing. Jenn also owns and operates Brindles Awesome Ice Cream. This is the first restaurant the couple has built from the ground up.
Chef White is joined by Kent Russell formerly of Maverick and Outlaw Kitchens. Kent will be Eastside Kitchenette’s sous chef extraordinaire helping to create magic in the kitchen.
The new restaurant has a stylish, casual dining area with much of the original interior left intact. The space is spacious while still offering a cozy, almost romantic, atmosphere.
Eastside Kitchenette brings some of the chef’s favorite comfort foods onto the menu adding new flavors and inspiration along the way. You can expect to see Bacon & Jalapeno Hushpuppies with a white BBQ sauce and escabeche. This starter offers an ever so slight kick and is sure to put a smile on your face.
The Charred Octopus Tacos are not your everyday Tex-Mex food, but do offer a nice variance to the usual fish tacos. Combined with Apple pico and salsa verde in a roasted jalapeno lime mayo, the octopus shares a corn tortilla with pickled red onion, thin sliced radishes and cotija cheese.
Chef loves using pork belly and his Bourbon Braised Pork Belly hit all the spots for me. Here he adds more flavor with cilantro & chilies and puts it all atop a bed of Parmesan Potato Puree. My comfort meter just went up a couple of notches.
How about a not so simple salad with the Big Eye Tuna Poke. Ahi tuna is marinated in a ginger soy sauce then mixed with avocado, serrano peppers, finely cut radish & carrot sticks topped with an Ahi Amarillo Aioli & sesame seeds all sitting on a bed of lettuce. There were so many great flavors in this I could have eaten it all night.
Soup rather than salad maybe? Try this variation of Chicken & Dumplings. Stewed chicken is mixed with fresh mushrooms and peas then added to the Brioche dumplings. You have to try this savory stew and with the cold, wet weather, it is the perfect thing to warm your bones.
Bring on some heat with the Grilled Bacon Wrapped Jalapeno Skewers. These roasted peppers are filled with pimento cheese and then the whole thing is topped with a green goddess sauce. The sauce and cheese will help cool down any extra-hot peppers.
If you love oysters, Chef does something here too. His cornmeal dusted oyster are lightly fried and put in a slider bun with deviled aioli, hot sauce and house made pickles. This is another one of my favorites on the menu.
Of course I don’t want to forget the Eastside Fried Chicken. This is a dill brined chicken that is fried and served with mashed potatoes and mustard greens. And the Eastside Burger is a double meat, double cheese burger with all the trimmings including those fabulous house made pickles.
Everything here is comfort food at its finest, even with a few new twists along the way. And this is what makes Chef White so popular. Whatever you eat here you won’t soon forget. It’s not your grandma’s comfort food, it’s the next best thing!
Eastside Kitchenette has a full-service bar with a selection of top brands, plus several signature bourbon-centric cocktails, and an array of beer and wine. Happy Hour, 4-7 p.m. daily, features drink and snack specials.
