Enjoy Healthy, Mouthwatering Meals While Partaking of Beautiful Views
I had the pleasure of dining at this hidden gem a few weeks back while staying at Hillside Boutique Hotel. What I found there was hearty yet healthy fare, delicious wine selections and a view that I won’t soon forget. This quaint bistro is part of the Hillside Boutique Hotel located a short drive west of San Antonio in Castroville, Texas. The hotel and restaurant are both situated on a hill, hence the name, which overlooks the Medina River Valley. This is a quiet place, away from the hustle and bustle of a busier life. A place where one can pull up a relaxing porch chair and breath in the fresh, country air while staying at the hotel or just stopping in for a meal.
Gusts can kick off their meal or hotel stay with a “Healthy Happy Hour,” in the 800 square foot Barrel Room. Here they can sink into deep leather chairs and couches as they sip on juice shots and nibble on an assortment of light bites. The room itself is a throwback to old Castroville with photos from the town’s early days lining the walls, and shelving made from reclaimed wood from the original property.
When you get hungry, head downstairs where you will step into the restaurant, a light, airy space affording diners breathtaking Hill Country views from almost every angle. Rustic, European style oversized chandeliers made in Turkey offer ambient lighting that enhances the modern aesthetic.
The menu offers a variety of delicious options from appetizers & Texas flatbreads, soups & salads, house specialties, steaks and even desserts. Start the meal with one of their signature craft cocktails with pure Texas flavor like the Lavender Collins made with Boodles Gin or the Hilly Texas Tea made with Deep Eddy vodka sweet tea. Sweet tea is a southern comfort drink and Deep Eddy Vodka is a distillery out of Austin, Texas. This cocktail will have you talking Texan in no time, bless your heart!
Tonight I started with the Wedge Salad, a favorite of mine. Texas Bistro’s version has a half wedge of iceberg lettuce topped with crisp bacon, sweet fresh apples, red onions, candied pecans and blue cheese crumbles. This plate is so large, you can easily make it your entree.
I found the choices for entrees very enticing with both the Pork Schnitzel, with its local focus, and steak, calling my name. I decided on the Tenderloin steak which was a perfectly cooked medium rare beauty. It arrived at the table still sizzling at the ideal temperature and was both tender and juicy with an aromatic red wine demi sauce. Served with a side of roasted potatoes and grilled fresh veggies, it made an ample meal.
My husband went with the Ribeye steak which was also served to his specifications. It was enhanced by a Smoked Whiskey butter sauce that was the icing on the cake. It came with mashed potatoes and broccoli. Both dishes were very reasonably priced for the size and quality of the meal.
We finished with a slice of New York cheesecake drizzled in chocolate and a dish of Creme Brulee. Both desserts hit our sweet spot and made a nice finish to a beautiful meal.
We capped off our dinner tonight with a nice glass of Cabernet out on the restaurant patio under the Texas stars. What a delightful meal in a perfect place!
