Sweet Treats from Peggy’s on the Green Sweeten the Season for Boerne Education Foundation
The holidays are a time of gathering and giving. And there’s no better way to indulge in both than through Peggy’s on the Green’s Pie in the Sky campaign. Gather with family and friends over pie, or give family and friends—and anyone you want to thank, impress and make smile—pie. ‘Tis the season when sharing sweet treats makes the world happy, and through Peggy’s Pie in the Sky, you can spread that happiness to local students as well.
How can you enjoy Pie in the Sky? The Pie in the Sky program features a special pie throughout November, and another for the Christmas season. For every slice or whole pie purchased during Pie in the Sky, Peggy’s donates half the proceeds to the Boerne Education Foundation. Peggy’s on the Green is the only local restaurant supporting the Boerne Education Foundation.
The featured pie for November is Peggy’s twist on a traditional pumpkin pie, while the featured sweet in December is Peggy’s unforgettable Chess Pie, made from Peggy Bohanan’s original recipe. To add one of these special pies to your holiday table—or give someone a sweet treat to say thank you, or to mark the holidays—call 210.254.3651. Each pie is $30, with $15 going to BEF. Ordering begins October 30th and is available through December 20th. Pies will be ready 48 hours after the initial order. The pies may be picked up at Peggy’s on the Green 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday.
And if you’re dining at Peggy’s, don’t hesitate to add dessert to your meal: Pie by-the-slice is available for diners to enjoy, and all of the profits from each $7.95 slice of the featured pies sold at the restaurant also benefit Boerne Education Foundation.
Even better: let Peggy’s do the cooking this Thanksgiving. Whether you want a traditional Thanksgiving meal or you’d like to enjoy Peggy’s signature steaks—enjoy Peggy’s à la carte Thanksgiving menu and be sure to end your meal with pie to help the Boerne Education Foundation.
Through Pie in the Sky, Mark Bohanan, chef-owner of Peggy’s on the Green, is following the example of his late mother Peggy, for whom Peggy’s on the Green is named. As a home economics teacher for many years as well as a cheerleading and basketball coach, for Peggy Bohanan, fostering young minds through education was always paramount.
Peggy was always whipping up pies: ice box pies, peach pies with the fresh peaches from the family’s backyard trees, and sky-high lemon meringue pies. Mark Bohanan’s favorite pie, though, was his mother’s chess pie, which she only made for special occasions. The pie, an old Southern staple, is simple and timeless — made with just flour, butter, sugar and eggs and perhaps a secret touch or two from whoever is making it.
“As a kid, if we were having chess pie, there was a very good reason,” said Bohanan. “With Pie in the Sky, there’s always a good reason to enjoy good pie.”
Helping Boerne’s Teachers, Schools and Students: Boerne Education Foundation The Boerne Education Foundation (BEF) is a nonprofit whose mission is to provide opportunities for excellence in education, promote innovation in teaching and partner with the community to enhance the quality of education. BEF works closely with Boerne Independent School District (ISD)and its teachers to support areas where additional funding is needed or where innovative teaching tools can make a subject more meaningful to students. Funding touches every one of the 9,136 students and 606 teachers in the district’s 10 schools.
Due to Boerne ISD’s budget constraints, the schools rely heavily on BEF to provide much-needed classroom supplies and resources such as books, microscopes and computers. In addition, BEF aids teachers through classroom grants and by providing every teacher with a $50 supply gift card to help offset out-ofpocket expenses when preparing their classrooms for a new school year. The Boerne Education Foundation is dedicated to ensuring that students of all levels and abilities can reach their potential through an education that will last a lifetime.
This year’s Pie in the Sky donation will benefit Boerne ISD’s Culinary Program, a full sequence of courses that students can take all four years of their high school education. Seniors in the program get real-life culinary experience in area restaurants, including Peggy’s on the Green. Six students rotate through practicum sites throughout the year as part of the capstone course to the culinary arts pathway.
The latest brainchild of Mark Bohanan, chef-owner of nationally-renowned Bohanan’s Prime Steaks and Seafood and founder of the annual San Antonio Cocktail Conference, Peggy’s on the Green is a casual yet elegant Southern-inspired restaurant and craft cocktail bar located inside Ye Kendall Inn, a stunningly restored stagecoach stop that’s been serving up fine Texas hospitality since 1859.
