Step Right Up! The Witte is Featuring the World-Renowned Hertzberg Circus Collection

Step Right Up! Circus in the City celebrates the excitement of the circus coming to town, featuring a look at death-defying performances, glittering costumes and strange beasts from foreign lands. This exhibition will include rare artifacts from the world-renowned Hertzberg Circus Collection of the Witte Museum. Circus in the City will be on display from October 27 through December 9, 2018 at the Witte Museum and is included in Museum Admission.

Circus in the City explores the exhilarating spectacle of the circus taking over San Antonio. Visitors will feel the thrill and nostalgia of Circus Day under the Big Top with colorful posters, thunderous music, shimmering costumes and the aroma of popcorn greeting them.

Artifacts will include a trapeze model representing Alfredo Codona’s world-famous triple somersault, costumes of a human cannonball and ringmaster, a sword swallower’s stand, a lion tamer’s chair and General Tom Thumb’s coach gifted by P.T. Barnum. Original posters and photographs from the Ringling Bros., Barnum & Bailey Circus, Cole Bros. Circus and more will also be on display.

“The circus has had roots in San Antonio since in the 1850s and visitors can experience it all again here at the Witte Museum,” said Amy Fulkerson, Chief Curator of the Witte Museum. “This exhibition will give visitors a chance to relive the magic of the circus and San Antonio’s extensive circus-filled past.”

Visitors will be able to discover the world of talented acrobats, exotic animals and death-defying feats and can learn how to juggle in a circus interactive. Circus in the City will feature many photo opportunities, including one where visitors can see how they compare to Jack Earle, the 8 foot 6 inches tall Texas Giant, and another where visitors can stand in a poster with the legendary lion tamer, Clyde Beatty.
