Lovely Brunch at Peggy’s on the Green is just a Short Drive from San Antonio
Enjoying a lovely brunch at Peggy’s on the Green in the quaint Texas town of Boerne is something you must add to your bucket list. Located just minutes North of San Antonio on I-10, this treasure in the Texas Hill Country is a beautiful place to spend some weekend time browsing shops, walking the cypress-lined Cibolo Creek or taking in a little history. It is also a place to find some wonderful cuisine at Peggy’s on the Green.
Located in the historic Kendall Inn, a 19th century stagecoach stop between Cibolo Creek and Boerne’s Town Square, Peggy’s serves southern-inspired food as fresh and inspiring as the local ingredients. At Peggy’s casual yet elegant eatery you can spend a lazy Sunday on the wrap-around porch sipping a Mimosa, Bourbon Milk Punch or Bloody Mary before shopping. But you definitely shouldn’t leave until you have partaken of their brunch. Peggy’s is the brain child of Chef/Owner Mark Bohanan who also owns the famous Bohanan’s Prime Steak and Seafood restaurant in downtown San Antonio. Mark named this newest venture after his mother, a great cook in her own right. Many dishes at Peggy’s are made by hand from scratch just like his grandmother and mother used to make and all use the freshest local ingredients from nearby farmers and ranchers.
While waiting on my order, I enjoyed a lovely Bloody Mary. The adornment of pickled green bean, olive and tomato was a small appetizer to munch on and tide me over. You can do a Bloody Maria instead by requesting tequila in place of the usual vodka in this Sunday morning elixir. Not ready for a cocktail? They make a rich cup of coffee that will keep you awake for your afternoon shopping trip.
I really love chicken and waffles and when I saw that Peggy’s on the Green had Buttermilk Fried Chicken with an unusual twist of a Mac and Cheese “waffle”, I was all in to try it. This Fried Wing-on Chicken Breast was served with Mac and Cheese that had been put into a waffle press. It comes out toasty and crunchy mimicking a waffle. Expect just a little sweet heat and a lot of southern goodness with this dish!
The Peggy’s Standard breakfast is a pretty safe choice if you don’t want to try something too different. This delightful brunch item is served with two eggs your style, pork link sausage or thick-cut tender belly bacon, hash browns and a house-made biscuit. This choice is outstanding no matter how you put it together. The pork sausage is the best I have found on any menu anywhere is a long time and the belly bacon was so good I had to ask for a side order. Neither one of these breakfast meats was overly salty which I was delighted about. The standard breakfast also comes with a side of seasonal fruit.
The house-made biscuits were also scrumptious. I loved them so much I requested a side basket of them too! Put some whipped butter and local honey on these delights and you will want to order some to take home. These should get an award for best biscuits!
Everything on Peggy’s menu sounds wonderful so you will probably be like me and have a hard time choosing what to order. I suggest you just close your eyes and point at the menu and whatever comes up is what you try. Whatever you get is sure to be a delicious here. And remember, you can always come back next week!
Peggy’s on the Green bar has a great selection of spirits, beers and a very extensive wine list. So if you are thirsty, this is the place to be. Their bar is open all day until close so come in to try a new craft cocktail, Texas beer or a truly great wine.
