Zoës Kitchen is Working to Make San Antonio Healthier

Zoës Kitchen is All About Living a Healthy Mediterranean Diet

“Third San Antonio location is now open in Sonterra Village”

**Full Disclosure: I received lunch in exchange for my review.  All opinions are mine.

Yes, you have heard it before. You need to eat unprocessed foods; lean proteins, fresh fruits & veges, and healthy grains. But that is easier said than done, right! You work all day and then after work you have to run the kids somewhere or go to a meeting or whatever. How do you find time to make a fresh, healthy meal when you finally get home?

One way is to plan a few simple, healthy meals for your least busy nights of the week and the other nights you can take the family to Zoës Kitchen, a fast casual restaurant whose menu is made up of Mediterranean-inspired dishes. The Mediterranean diet is made up of healthy, fresh, simple foods that are not just good for you, but foods you will love to eat. Food like Hummus which is made fresh in their kitchen every day and Quinoa Salad made with quinoa and fresh vegetables served over a bed of fresh greens and tossed with fresh made olive & lemon vinaigrette. Not just a salad, this salad is hearty enough to be a meal by itself.

I tried the hummus and it is rich and creamy with a hint of garlic and olive oil. I loved the fresh warm pita slices that came with it too. I could just eat a plate of their hummus and I would be happy and full as it is a generous portion!

Everything on their menu is freshly prepared when ordered and nothing is fried or microwaved. You are getting 100% fresh natural nutrient-dense food. Nothing is processed. Zoës Kitchen uses olive oil for cooking, which is rich in antioxidants, colorful fresh vegetables, which are also rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, lean protein (chicken, turkey, fish and very little red meat), grains like quinoa instead of rice to boost your protein and iron, and sugar only for special occasions.

Zoës Kitchen cooks their food predominantly by grilling it! As I stated earlier, nothing is fried or microwaved and they use only herbs, spices and lemons to season. The Chicken Kabobs, one of the dishes that put Zoës Kitchen on the map, so to speak, are tender, juicy and very flavorful. Their kabobs are marinated in Zoës special house-made Greek Dressing (that they also sell) which gives them their wonderful zesty flavor. You get two large kabobs with chicken, tomatoes, grilled peppers and onions, a side of Greek salad (which is one of the best I have ever had) rice pilaf and pita bread. I cleaned my plate!!

Another menu item they are well known for is their Chicken Salad. This salad is made with white meat only and mixed with a little celery so you get the full richness of the chicken shining through. This makes a great salad topper or a wonderful sandwich on their 7-grain bread with lettuce and tomato. All their sandwiches include a fresh side (I suggest the Greek salad).

Zoës Kitchen also offers a variety of gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options. Zoës is committed to serving food of exceptional quality and using fresh ingredients prepared daily from original recipes – perfect for folks that value eating real, unprocessed foods but whose busy lives limit their time in the kitchen. At Zoës, guests can dine in, order online or call ahead for takeout. Also available for purchase are a variety of fully-prepared Dinners for Four for the hungry family on the go and Fresh Takes by the pint. All these options really make it easy to get your family on a healthy eating plan. Having a party? Zoës’ extensive catering menu includes box lunches, party trays and hot meals for any business occasion or social gathering that can be delivered locally.

And Zoës Kitchen is such an educational experience. It is so easy to learn how to live Mediterranean just by eating there. Then all you have to do is make sure you have a few simple ingredients on hand at home to make your own Mediterranean masterpieces.

A list of ingredients to have on hand:

  • Olive Oil
  • Herbs & Spices (including red pepper flakes, oregano, rosemary, thyme and cinnamon)
  • Yogurt & cheese
  • Brown & wild rice
  • Healthy grains & seeds (Amaranth, Quinoa, Millet, Teff, Spelt)
  • Whole grain pasta
  • Legumes

And always try to use the freshest, local ingredients you can find!

I didn’t try it this trip, but I can’t wait to go back and sink my teeth into Yaya’s hand-made Chocolate Cake! Look out Zoës, I’ll be back!

And thank you to David Rodriguez, general manager at the Sonterra location for making my experience so enjoyable. If you have any questions or concerns about the menu, David or any of the personable staff will be happy to help you.
