The Travis Park main stage, presented by the Majestic Theatre, delivers an outstanding lineup of national, regional, and local jazz talent including NYC-based joyful jazz collective, Sammy Miller & The Congregation; Grammy-nominated Latin jazz outfit, The Pedrito Martinez Group; NPR Tiny Desk and Austin City Limits veterans, Tomar & The FCs; and the newest project led by Grammy-nominated drummer, composer, and arranger, Gerry Gibbs & The Thrasher People. Established in 1929, San Antonio’s Majestic Theatre is a National Historic Landmark and one of the nation’s finest atmospheric theatres, entertaining in the heart of downtown for over 90 years.
As the San Antonio Parks Foundation works to support and grow the local artist community, you will see new and familiar faces sharing their talents on the main stage including multi Latin-Grammy Award Winner, Joe Posada; the newly founded, Heritage Big Band led by BillyRay Sheppard; trumpeter, educator, Grammy-nominated contemporary jazz and blues artist, Adrian Ruiz and his quintet, along with the United States Air Force Band of the West Dimensions In Blue ensemble.
The KRTU Tiger Stage, located along Jefferson Street, is presented by Ancira Auto Group and KRTU 91.7FM, Trinity University’s radio station that offers a dual-format programming jazz music daily 5 AM – 10 PM, followed by indie music 10 PM – 5 AM. With a talent lineup curated in partnership with SA Parks Foundation, the KRTU Tiger Stage hosts a wealth of artists including experimental jazz fusion group, Jamail; Three Swings & A Miss led by the smooth vocals, warm tones, and charming vintage vibes of Noelle Goforth; and instrumental seven-piece with heavy R&B and funk influences, The Blueprint.
The Legacy Park Stage returns for the second year just three blocks west from Travis Park off Travis Street. Jazz fans, downtown aficionados and visitors alike begin their Jazz’SAlive weekend with Friday evening performances from the Anthony Thomas Quartet; prohibition-era jazz outfit, Trad Police; and Joshua Alderete & The Fellowship. Legacy Park is a 1.2-acre park owned and operated by Weston Urban in San Antonio’s downtown. The space is outfitted with a promenade, an event lawn and is anchored by Pinkerton’s Barbecue. Jazz’SAlive welcomes the fall season with the H-E-B Pumpkin Patch, a tradition where families and friends capture memories to last a lifetime. This year, with the help of H-E-B, Jazz’SAlive is adding a new activation: H-E-B Melody Masters Music Circle, a collaborative, playful learning opportunity for music fans of all ages and genres. Designed by educator and music-production-aficionado, Michael Randolph, this interactive activity features a 16′ diameter, donut-shaped table with a staff producer/conductor in the center and 12 play stations around the outside where users create music together with pre-programmed melodic algorithms that keep participants in-key and on-beat.
In partnership with the 80|20 Foundation, the San Antonio Parks Foundation is tying together the downtown jazz experience with a reimagined street performers initiative to bring live jazz to Travis and Houston Street. Modeled after traditional busking, the initiative guarantees payment, in addition to earned tips, for artists who participate in the program.
“We’re excited to work with the 80|20 Foundation to bring live jazz to the streets of downtown in an effort to support local artists, add vibrancy to our downtown community, and assist with wayfinding between Travis and Legacy parks,” says Libby Day, Director of Communications for the San Antonio Parks Foundation.
Additionally, with support from Centro San Antonio, Jazz’SAlive is able to meet growing production and talent costs while providing an elevated guest experience for all Jazz’SAlive fans. Centro San Antonio is a placemaking organization working every day to create a more beautiful, playful, welcoming, and prosperous downtown highlighting the San Antonio Spirit in the heart of the city. The downtown advocacy organization works with TIRZ funds to provide existing events the resources to grow and scale programming to best meet the needs of downtown and the larger San Antonio community.
But wait, there’s more: Jazz’SAlive organizers at the San Antonio Parks Foundation have a habitually collaborative spirit working to bring joy and jazz to more San Antonians through pre and post-festival celebrations.
In partnership with downtown’s newest urban respite space and pocket park located at the corner of Pecan and Soledad Street, Weston Common, the Jazz’SAlive Kickoff Party takes place Thursday, September 22nd, 5 PM – 9 PM with Afro-Colombian Funk group, Superfónicos and beloved latin jazz artist, Jose Amador & TERRA NOVA. Guests can also expect to see the 2022 Jazz’SAlive commemorative poster artwork displayed with the opportunity to purchase prints signed by the artist, Swerv O’ Harold. Prints will also be available for purchase at the festival. This event is free, all ages, and open to the public. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
On Saturday night, you will find the St. Anthony Hotel’s Rooftop Terrace alive with jazz as they host the Roarin’ 20s Old Fashioned Swing Party, the Saturday night after party, 10:30 PM – 1:30 AM. The official hospitality partner of Jazz’SAlive, the St. Anthony Hotel hotel sits along the south edge of Travis Park and offers sweeping views of the festival and southern skyline. Room bookings are available for Jazz’SAlive patrons who wish to complete their weekend of jazz with the ultimate downtown luxury accommodations, just a step away from the main stage and official after parties.
