Volare Italian Restaurant is Celebrating 50 Years of Serving San Antonio on February 18th at 7 PM
Volare Italian Restaurant, located at 3902 McCullough Ave, San Antonio, TX 78212 inside the historic Olmos Pharmacy, is celebrating its 50th Anniversary of serving San Antonio patrons on February 18th at 7pm.
How it Started
Started in 1972 by Christian S. Rubio and his family, Volare soon became a neighborhood staple amongst locals at their original Alamo Heights location on Broadway. The restaurant served classic pizzas, calzones, & homemade pasta dishes from their small venue for 47 years before relocating to Olmos Park’s historic Olmos Pharmacy building in 2019.
About the Chef
Long time Volare chef & eventual owner, Antonio Sorgente, attributes the success of Volare over the years to “not using frozen products and always cooking it like we do it at home.” Sorgente, a native of Naples, Italy took over the business over 15 years ago & added his personal stamp to the classic Italian fare that Volare is known for. You can still catch Sorgente in the kitchen on occasion, stirring batches of bubbling sauces or rolling out some fresh pasta for his favorite dish, Linguine Frutti Di Mare.
The current owner, Eder Muniz, began as Sorgente’s protege, “many moons ago”, according to Muniz. Muniz & his family took over the business when Sorgente wanted to take a more hands off approach, and oversaw the transition to Volare’s new home in early 2019. “It was the perfect spot for Volare.” Muniz says of the move to the old Olmos Pharmacy, “You could feel the history of the place, the gathering and laughter. We knew that’s what we wanted.” They decided to keep some elements of the building intact, proudly displaying the old neon lights that surround the space as well as paying homage with their Olmos Pharmacy Burger, a tribute to the old lunch counter fare served there in the 40’s & 50’s.
Along with the rest of the restaurant industry, Volare had some dark times during the pandemic. “It was difficult, to say the least,” Muniz states of the past couple years, “We had some challenging times, but we never lost faith.” That faith is what Muniz attributes to keeping the restaurant afloat. “Thankfully, we have come out on the other side.” Now, along with his wife and daughters, Muniz hopes to keep the tradition of the local pizzeria alive by providing San Antonians the perfect spot for a great Italian dinner, date night, or family celebration for many years to come.
