Iron Cactus San Antonio Brings Great Food to the River Walk

Iron Cactus San Antonio is More Proof Great Food Can Be Found on the River Walk

Iron Cactus San Antonio is one River Walk restaurant where you will find consistently good food as well as great signature cocktails, many using Texas spirits. And if you have an affection for wine or beer, they have a nice selection of both to choose from.

As a San Antonio food writer, I have eaten at many of the restaurants on the River Walk and I am usually impressed by the quality food there. Iron Cactus is one eatery that continues to impress me. They have consistently good food and drinks, no matter how busy they are. The service is always timely and courteous, everything arrives to the table at the proper temperature, presentation is great and everything tastes wonderful. In addition, I also feel the prices here are spot-on for the size of the dish, quality of the food and location of the restaurant. (Iron Cactus is located directly on the River Walk.)

Tonight I started off with a 512 Margarita, a featured drink this evening. The 512 tequila is out of Austin, Texas and gets its name from their area code. This margarita is made from the 512 Blanco, a spicy, smooth 100% agave tequila mixed with Contreau, lime juice and agave nectar to keep it classic.

While sipping on my margarita, I ordered a plate of Pork Tamale Pops. These bites of pork, surrounded by tamale masa and pepper jack cheese, have been a people’s choice award winner at the “Bud Light Taste of the River Walk” competition. One bite and you will see why. A word of warning though, if you don’t like things too hot, be watchful of the sauce on the side!

I also tried the El Pepino Margarita for a twist to the classic. This elixir is made with Milagro silver, an estate-grown, 100% blue agave tequila that is renowned for its crisp, fresh, agave taste, citrus notes and smoothness. Add to this a jalapeno & cucumber simple syrup and muddled cilantro and you have a fresh tasting drink with a slight kick at the end. This goes really well with spicy foods.

In Mexican cuisine, you can’t go wrong with Tortilla Soup and this Mexican Grill does this one to perfection. With shredded chicken and vegetables cooked in a rich, spicy chicken broth, then topped with fresh avocado slices, shredded cheese and tri-colored tortilla strips, this is a luscious starter to any meal.

If it is warm outside, as is often the case in Texas, and you would rather start with something that will be cooler on the palate, go for the Citrus Baby Spinach Salad. Here, fresh spinach shares a plate with orange & grapefruit segments, seasonal berries, Texas goat cheese, whole toasted almonds dressed in a cilantro-lime vinaigrette. You can actually make a meal of this either as is or by adding a protein like, salmon, steak or pepper-crusted tuna.

From the Tequila Grill comes a beautiful and flavorful Pescado Veracruz. This dish features fresh Atlantic Cod topped with a Veracruz sauce, a blend of tomatoes, olives, green chilies and red onions. Served with a cilantro lime rice and a seasonal vegetable (tonight was Broccolini) this was absolutely delicious.

From the Favoritos de la Case section of the menu was a Pescado del Mar, seared Atlantic Cod topped with wild caught gulf shrimp and bay scallops all nicely tied together in a citrus-butter sauce. This dish came with sauteed spinach and the cilantro lime rice. Very fresh and fantastic!

Now don’t even think about leaving without trying the Mexican Donuts for dessert! This dish has also won the “Bud Light Taste of the River Walk” in the dessert competition. Here you get four light and fluffy donuts filled with housemade sweet cream filling. Then they are sprinkled with powdered sugar while warm so the sugar melts on the dough. They come with a side of Kahlúa fudge sauce for topping or dipping, you decide. These donuts were warm, soft and slightly gooey. You will want a cup of coffee to accompany this dessert!

All the dishes at Iron Cactus are large, so the good news is you may have supper for tomorrow night as well. And what a bag of leftovers this will be! Come enjoy both the River Walk and Iron Cactus all year long.
