Twin Liquors Mirrors the Charitable Vision of the San Antonio Cocktail Conference
As one of the sponsors of the San Antonio Cocktail Conference 2018, Twin Liquors lends their support for premium spirits as well as to helping their community, something the Cocktail Conference is all about.
I had the opportunity to sit down with Sandra Spalding, Director of Marketing & Events last weekend during the conference. I not only was interested to learn a little history about this company that seems to be expanding quickly across central Texas but I also wanted to find out what this impressive company, dedicated to fine wines and spirits, sees as the upcoming trends for cocktails & spirits in 2018.
Opening in 1937 in downtown Austin just after the repeal of Prohibition, this family-owned business started as a small package store. The Jabour Package Store, as it was known, housed a liquor store, drug store and soda fountain under one roof. With hard work, the Jabour brothers were soon able to expand their business to three liquor stores and one beer tavern. When the third generation of Jabour’s opened a 700-foot liquor store at the corner of 7th and Red River in downtown Austin they also changed the name to “Twin Liquors” to honor Theodore Jabour, one of the original owners/twins of Jabour Package Store.
This new generation, going against the grain, felt that retail consumers wanted and should be able to buy premium liquor and wine. Serving customers to the best of their ability and supplying premium products became their family ambition. This and wanting to broaden the company to serve their community in all neighborhoods fueled their growth for both expansion and success. They started widening their reach in the Austin Metro area first and soon branched to outlying areas like Waco, College Station, Conroe, Houston, The Woodlands, and San Antonio. Today they own an impressive 80+ stores, all located in Texas.
As one of the sponsors of this year’s conference and as a big retailer of fine wines and spirits, I wanted to know what they see as the trending spirits and cocktails in the next few years.
“Whiskey is always trending but Mezcal is definitely up and coming”, stated Sandra. “People used to think of Mezcal as the stuff with the worm in the bottle, but that’s so different from Mezcals of today. Quality Mezcal tends to have a earthy or smoky taste. People are inclined to be intimidated by Mezcal but it can be used the same way as tequila, drinking it either straight or in cocktails. So it shouldn’t be intimidating. Gin is also still trending but some people prefer gins that don’t have a strong juniper taste.” She told me that as far as cocktails go, stick with the classic drinks which are trending again. This is true for both home and bar establishments. Try a Mai Tai, MANHATTAN, Rusty Nail, a classic Martini or Negroni as they are easy to make (don’t require 30 weird ingredients) and everyone loves them.
Being as I like to throw parties and while I had Sandra’s ear, I also asked her what she felt was the easiest, least stressful way to set up a home bar for any party. “I would make sure I had a good vodka, whiskey, gin and tequila on hand,” she said. “Then it’s a good idea to have both a sweet and dry vermouth, angostura bitters, fresh citrus (limes, lemons, oranges) along with a squeezer. To fancy it up a bit, make ice cubes in different shapes.” She said, “If you don’t want to be mixing at the bar all night, make it easy on quests by serving a punch in a pretty punch bowl and then guests can easily serve themselves.” Sandra’s last tip was to always have a nice white and red wine available. And always have a sparkling wine as it goes with all food selections.
The owners & associates of Twin Liquors take great pride in serving their customers and look forward to continued growth while serving and supporting their communities. Twin Liquors supports over 500 charitable events annually because they believe that helping communities is an essential component of fulfilling the needs of their customers.
This mirrors in part the vision of the San Antonio Cocktail Conference which is a Houston Street Charities event. Houston Street Charities is a non-profit organization created by Bohanan’s Prime Steaks & Seafood and Mark Bohanan. It was founded to oversee the San Antonio Cocktail Conference and other charitable endeavors of Bohanan’s, in an effort to make sure that giving back to community remains at the forefront of all of the events. San Antonio Cocktail Conference is a community partnership that donates 100 percent of conference profits to children’s charities.
So it makes sense that Twin Liquors was a perfect fit as a sponsor of the San Antonio Cocktail Conference 2018!
