Dinner with a View on the Historic Taos Plaza at The Gorge Bar & Grill
Needing a fix of some New Mexico Chile, it was time to head to The Gorge Bar & Grill for dinner with a view on the Historic Taos Plaza.
At the end of a long day of sightseeing, shopping and visiting museums, we had worked up quite an appetite. I had made dinner reservation at the highly recommended Gorge Bar & Grill located right on the plaza. I was told they were the place to get some really great food and their menu was diverse enough to satisfy any appetite. They have New Mexico dishes with the delicious green and red chili sauce, but you can also find pasta, burgers and steaks. You will even find fresh oysters and fish & chips on the menu. They are dedicated to using local products where possible and make everything from scratch, both food and cocktails. Sounds perfect!
This bar and grill is upbeat with a friendly, helpful staff to help with menu suggestions. The clientele is both a mix of tourists and locals. Seeing the locals means this eatery is most likely a good place to eat! And besides the great food, the bonus of eating here is watching the sunset over the plaza on one side while having the mountains as a backdrop on the other. Life is good from this point of view!
In addition to their culinary delights, they have a good assortment of local beers both on tap and in the bottle, great wines both foreign and domestic and some premium tequilas & mezcals for both sipping or mixing in a thirst quenching cocktail!
We started our meal tonight with an appetizer of Fried Green Beans and ranch dressing for dipping. This appetizer was a first for me and I say it is so, so good and very addictive. This is probably a great way to get kids to eat their green beans!
My meal tonight has to be the Carne Adovada Plate as I needed to get some of the rich, red New Mexico chile. This red chile braised pork was just oozing with mild spicy flavor. The plate came with perfectly cooked black beans, guacamole, sour cream and flour tortillas. My soul is happy now!
My traveling companions ordered a mixture of items from the menu, giving us a good sampling of various dishes.
There was the Gorge BBQ Pork Ribs with sweet/sour Apple Cider Slaw. The ribs sat atop a mound of creamy mashed potatoes which they happily substituted for the sweet potato fries. A tangy BBQ sauce was served on the side.
With a name like Gorge Yourself Meatloaf, you have to give this one a try. With a twist on the traditional dish, this ground chuck loaf incorporates smoked bacon, chopped carrots and green chiles into the mix. Sliced atop mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables it is finished with your choice of red chili or brown gravy. This one is a must try with tons of savory goodness.
The Chicken Enchiladas are filled with New Mexico flavors. These three ample sized rolled corn tortillas are stuffed with pulled chicken and green chile tomatillo sauce, then topped with lots of cheese. They come with a side of New Mexico rice and black beans.
The Gorge Bar & Grill has a good selection of desserts to sooth the sweet tooth but our party was too full tonight to order any. I hear tell the IBC Root Beer Float is good here if you can possibly eat one after a meal.
The Gorge Bar & Grill is a great place to get some really great food when visiting Taos. Loved everything about this place!
