Hottest Kick-off to Summer Announced by Colorado State University and Historic Stanley Hotel (May 24 -28)

Colorado State University and The Historic Stanley Hotel announce the ultimate culinary hottest kick-off to summer. The CSU BBQ weekend includes special hands-on demonstrations, BBQ culinary workshops with experts from around the country, as well as a two-day BBQ competition over Memorial Day Weekend and all are open to the public.

A first of its kind for CSU, the BBQ weekend gives culinary aficionados (both amateur and expert alike) a chance to rub-shoulders, learn from, and cook alongside some of CSU’s top BBQ experts.

“We think of this as summer camp for BBQ fans,” said Stanley General Manager Ron Morin. “It’s all about a community coming together to celebrate food, family and our favorite summer past time.”

Starting May 24th, CSU will offer a two-day hands-on BBQ cooking workshop called CSU’s BBQ University hosted by the school’s top culinary experts and meat scientists.  The fun and competition continue into the weekend with the launch of the 1st Annual Rocky Mountain BBQ Showdown – a 24 hour BBQ competition/party open to the public and hosted on the front lawn of the Stanley Hotel.

Students enrolled in the BBQ U will have the opportunity to stay overnight at the Stanley making it a truly immersive experience. During the day, students will work with BBQ experts from across the country to learn about meat selection complete with carcass carvings, spice and sauce formulation, and different cooking methods to play on natural flavors, with samples along the way.

“We’re so excited to take our expertise off campus and open it up to a whole new group of students: the general public,” said Kevin Pond head of CSU’s Animal Science program. “While there’s plenty of science and theory packed into BBQ U, the best learning often comes from a plate with plenty of napkins on the side.”

Starting Saturday, May 28th, students can put their knowledge to the test by joining the general public and competitors from across the country at the Rocky Mountain BBQ Showdown. The competition will be hosted on the front lawn of the Stanley Hotel and will include two-days of events, drinks, music, and of course, plenty of amazing BBQ!

Enrollment in the competition is open to all skill levels including amateurs and experts alike. Competitors can enter their best brisket, sausage, beef, pork, and lamb ribs, pork shoulder and chicken to win cash prizes in each category. Contestants can also compete for a People’s Choice award.

All event proceeds benefit the Colorado State University School of Animal Sciences. It’s the perfect way to stay and play – no bones about it!
