Big Bib BBQ Opens to the Public at Stinson Municipal Airport
Big Bib BBQ offers lunch with a view at their newest location at 8535 Mission Rd, San Antonio, TX. Stinson Airport was established in 1915 when the Stinson family initially leased the land from the City of San Antonio. Stinson Municipal Airport is the second oldest general aviation airport in continuous operation in the United States. During World War II the airfield was used by the United States Army Air Forces as a training base. At the end of the war the airfield was returned over to the City of San Antonio for civil use. It currently serves as the primary reliever for general aviation traffic for San Antonio International airport.
Stinson is conveniently located only 6 miles south of downtown San Antonio’s central business district and the River Walk so the airport is extremely appealing to operators of light aircraft, individuals, and private aviation companies.
Stinson Airport is also home to some of the finest BBQ in central Texas, The Big Bib BBQ. So now, not only can you catch a flight here, or get a glimpse of some of the city’s history, you can also get your fill on some really good cue. Owner Stanley Shropshire had one thing in mind when opening his first location at 104 Lanark Dr. off Austin Hwy and that was to serve up the “best BBQ in the state of Texas”. Apparently they are getting it right with their 14 hour slow-cooked meat. The final product is cooked the way barbecue should be over aged oak and mesquite wood which is complemented with a dry rub made from a special blend of herbs and spices. They were voted “Best in the City” for their BBQ in 2016 and won their second Blue Plate award last month for having a squeaky clean kitchen.
Meat selection here is a BBQ lover’s dream with brisket, baby back ribs, chicken quarters, turkey breast and several types of sausage.
At The Big Bib BBQ you can buy meat by the pound, combo plates, and sandwiches. In addition you can get sides like sweet potato or baked potato casserole, Cole slaw, green beans, pinto beans or chili beans and potato salad. And you certainly don’t want to miss the southern-inspired desserts like cobbler or banana pudding.
Big Bib still offers full-service catering which is what made them famous in the first place. They can serve any size group or event, no matter the occasion. Just fill out the catering form and get the party started. You have all the fun and they do all the work!
And right next door to The Big Bib is The Big Bib Too Event Center. This world-class event center with a full staff, bar, stage, and lighting & sound system can be booked for private parties and functions. The entertainment is top notch here hosting national jazz artists, transforming the Big Bib Too Event Center into the premier place to see live music in San Antonio. Check their schedule often to see upcoming events.
In the future Shropshire hopes to add wine and live jazz on the patio at the Stinson location. “Where else can you get a view like this,” states Shropshire.
