Pianos to benefit low-income schools in the San Antonio area
Self-taught composer Nathan Felix and the Chamber Orchestra of San Antonio (COSA) to hold the Classical Music Kegger on May 7 at the Mattress Factory (1903 S St. Mary’s) to benefit lower-income schools in the San Antonio area through enhancement of their music programs with pianos.
After living in Los Angeles, Felix realized the importance and value of the ‘arts’ in community integration. With that in mind, he took to creating a performance to not only involve the community, but benefit it as well. The idea is to collect six pianos that are considered “trash” to some, and convert them into “treasures” for others. The restored pianos will be used in a night of performances by San Antonio artists, and concluding with Felix’s six piano composition where the audience sits center to the strategic positioning of pianos creating a surroundsound experience.
Felix introduced the Classical Music Kegger Series in the Rundberg neighborhood (a neighborhood overlooked in terms of arts events) in North Austin, TX in November of 2015. Felix hopes this ongoing project will contribute to community by providing resources for a new generation of artists/musicians. “I want to start grooming and growing the next crop of young, talented kids,” Felix
Soon after the Rundberg installment, Felix met with COSA Artistic Director, Paul Montalvo and COSA Millennial committee member, Marianna Vela to bring the Classical Music Kegger to the San Antonio community. Realizing they share a passion for exposing classical music to new listeners and outreach to their respective local communities, COSA and Felix set out to include San Antonio as the next installment in the Classical Music Kegger Series. The concert will be held on May 7th at 8PM at the Mattress Factory, 1903 S. St Mary’s St. Sponsors include Alamo Beer, Ranger Creek Brewery and Esquire.
