Turkey & Swiss Skinny dressed with a side of spicy peppers
Potbelly Sandwich Shop Opens 2nd San Antonio Location in the Heart of Downtown
The Sandwich Shop known for its toasty sandwiches, hand-dipped shakes, hearty, protein power, made-to-order salads and its daily fresh baked cookies now calls the Rivercenter Mall home. Located street level at 849 E. Commerce St. across from the Chamber of Commerce and next door to St. Joseph’s Church, this Potbelly is filled with downtown memorabilia and a friendly Texas welcome. Each neighborhood Potbelly Sandwich Shop reflects the area it’s in by featuring artwork and memorabilia from the area. Old photos of an earlier downtown, a poster of the 1945 Errol Flynn movie “San Antonio”, shots of Spurs paraphernalia and artwork like a picture of the state flower all fill the walls with a microcosm of downtown’s past and present.
This neighborhood sandwich shop founded in Chicago in 1977 is still serving up its original recipe sandwich. If it works, don’t break it so to speak. Of course they have added some new items to the menu over the years just to keep things fresh, but the original recipe as well as the old potbelly stoves in every store are there to stay. It will always be a place for folks to gather and share a meal and some friendly conversation.
“So how do you Potbelly?” you ask.
Well first you choose your sandwich or salad, next your choose your toppings and last you pay and enjoy!
Sandwiches come in Originals (regular size since 1977), Bigs (30% more than original) and Flats (for those who want less bread). You also have a choice of regular or multi-grain bread for Originals and Bigs. Flats are made with thin multi-gran bread. Oh, and they offer Skinnys with less meat & cheese which comes in at under 400 calories! If this all sounds daunting, don’t worry. The knowledgeable staff will talk you through it.
My favorite sandwich is the Mediterranean with hummus, feta, artichoke hearts, crisp slices of cucumber and roasted red peppers. I like mine on a warm, crunchy flat and I add avocado slices*. I could probably eat this sandwich every day. They also have the Mediterranean with grilled chicken if you feel the need for meat.
With it’s original home in Chicago you really should try the Italian and go Big on this baby. I went with the multi-grain on this one too.
Filled with a great selection of Italian deli meat; Capicola, Mortadella, Pepperoni, Salami and some Provolone cheese, this one is a Chicago fave. Add some of Potbelly’s spicy peppers to put this one over the top or dress it with lettuce, tomatoes and onions (you need your veges after all).
Soups and chili are a hot item here as well! Some like the Broccoli Cheese are always on the menu and some rotate. I tried the Chicken Enchilada which is chock full of chicken in a hearty enchilada base. It had me smiling and reminded me I was deep in the heart of Texas and Tex-Mex country.
You can do the usual chips here or your can get a wonderfully satisfying side like coleslaw, macaroni or potato salad. Or get a whole dill pickle (just 5 calories).
Do not leave this shop without ordering you a hand-dipped shake, malt or smoothie. Once Texas summer is upon us I know this treat will be the coolest thing on Commerce street. Well, after the riverwalk or course! These frozen elixirs taste like the old soda-fountain drinks I used to get as a kid. And they are served with the Potbelly signature cookies on a straw. Kids of all ages will love the presentation. Today my choice was a coffee shake.
And the fresh baked cookies! Don’t forget to get a cookie! Baked fresh daily these cookies are right out of the oven warm goodness. If you can’t possibly eat one after that Big Italian sandwich and cup of soup, get one to go. Better yet, get a dozen to go cause you will want more later. That way you can share the cookie love with your friends….or not! My favorite is the Oatmeal Chocolate Chip but the others are pretty darn good too.
Potbelly Sandwich shops are also known for their good vibes featuring live local music and this Rivercenter shop will be strumming and singing too. Open just in time for Fiesta and wanting to be part of this city-wide party, the restaurant will be featuring local musicians daily. So come in, pull up a chair, meet some new friends, eat wholesome food, join stimulation conversation all while listening to great music and become part of this local neighborhood.
Potbelly is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. They also cater, so keep them in mind for your office lunch meetings. For more information visit www.potbelly.com.
*There is a small extra charge for the avocado slices.
