Chef Gabriel DeLeon Brings New Life to West Plano Village

with a Blend of Mexico City, Tex-Mex, and Santa Fe-Inspired Cuisine

Mi Dia’s newest location brings fresh flavor to Plano with scratch-made authenticity

As spring weather arrives in DFW, Mi Dia From Scratch, a concept by celebrated Chef Gabriel DeLeon that blends traditional Mexico City recipes with modern Tex-Mex and Santa Fe flavors, is a go-to patio destination in one of Plano’s latest developments, West Plano Village, on the east side of the Dallas NorthTollway and Parker Road. The 6,000-square-foot contemporary restaurant features a modern southwestern bar with an impressive “Tequila Tower,” consisting of more than 120 tequilas, and a spacious covered patio with comfortable lounge furniture, several mounted TVs, multiple heaters, three giant fans and the relaxing sounds of the trickling fountains nearby.

The concept, spearheaded by Chef-Managing Partner DeLeon, is the second Mi Dia From Scratch location in the DFW Metroplex, following the Grapevine location which opened in October, 2011. DeLeon takes much of his inspiration from his passion for travel throughout the world to bring authenticity to his dishes. Mi Dia From Scratch is named for DeLeon’s use of authentic ingredients in creating unique dishes by hand inspired by his training with renowned Mexican Chef Patricia Quintana in Mexico City.

“Our food is vibrant, soulful and complex.” said DeLeon. “Our menu is aimed at serving Mexican, Tex Mex and Santa Fe in a way that has not been successful before.”

Mi Dia From Scratch’s newest location, designed by Dallas architect firm Gerdes, Henrichson & Associates,  incorporates metal and glass to accentuate the modern southwestern atmosphere. The main dining area consists of mahogany leather seating areas, including an abundance of large leather booths, modern metal and glass light fixtures, and trend-setting stone walls adorned with modern art. Leather and wooden bar stools line the lounge and bar area, which features flat screen televisions, infused tequila on tap, and a magnificent “Tequila Tower,” boasting circular shelves with over 129 premium bottles of tequila.

The restaurant joins the lineup of retail and restaurants in West Plano Village including Dee Lincoln Steak and Burger Bar, Eatzi’s, Kona Grill, Lockhart Smokehouse, Pakpao, Princi Italia, Royale Hamburgers and more. The thriving area, which was designed for Plano residents to live, work, and dine in a metropolitan environment, sits directly off North Dallas Tollway and also houses residential areas including AMLI West Plano Village. The development also shares close proximity to Cinemark Legacy & XD, The Shops at Willow Bend, Willow Bend Market, and more for those looking for a post-shopping or movie retreat.

“We are thrilled about Mi Dia From Scratch’s newest location.” said Martin Meier, vice president of Hartnett Commercial Inc. “With the impressive roster of tenants and the high visibility of West Plano Village, not only will be able to draw in our existing fans, but also we will be able to gain more exposure with newcomers.”

DeLeon, along with Executive Chef Francisco Hernandez, is especially instrumental in the orchestration of flavor and presentation at Mi Dia From Scratch. Influenced by his father, Chef Juan DeLeon, and his mentor and personal coach, Patricia Quintana, Gabriel DeLeon uses his food genius acquired through his experiences to offer authenticity and friendly customer service like no other. The graduate of The Art Institute of Dallas has acquired a vast amount of knowledge from his many travels and cooking, eating and observing the best chefs and restaurants in the world.

The menu is divided into six sections that pay homage to the three influential regions: “Snacks”, “Soup & Salads”, “Mexican Cuisine”, “Artisanal Street Tacos”, “Santa Fe”, and “Tex Mex Combos”. Menu items pay tribute to DeLeon’s father, who established Irving’s La Margarita, a local Tex-Mex spot with exceptional food, service, recipes, specialty tequilas and signature drinks. The menu includes Pollo Agave, a tribute to one of the senior Chef DeLeon’s first dishes, in which Gabriel honors the recipe but adds his own Shiitake mushroom reduction. Highlights of the menu also include the Dallas Observer Ironfork Award-Winning Duck Carnitas, flour tortillas filled with roasted Maple Leaf Farms duck, pickled onion, roasted poblanos, micro cilantro and chile morita; Mi Dia Tamales, traditional hand-made tamales filled with pork, New Mexico red and green chile sauces and topped with crema and pastil de Oaxaca salsa; Sea Bass, grilled Chilean sea bass with a chile guajillo rub, pickled cabbage, avocado, chile morita remoulade, micro cilantro and flour tortillas, Tableside Guacamole handmade live at each table with the help of a mobile cart featuring an array of  fresh ingredients, and more.

The restaurant also has a gluten free and vegetarian menu and a brunch menu served on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mi Dia From Scratch utilizes fresh and fine lemons to craft margaritas within the mixed beverage program. Lemons are used rather than limes due to the consistent flavor profile and year-round freshness. Over 60 specialty cocktails, margaritas and tequila flights have been created by a beverage and mixology specialist allowing patrons to be exposed to new, interesting flavors. Mi Dia From Scratch Plano will host a daily, weekday, happy hour from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.featuring specials on wine, beer and house margaritas.
